Fabulous Figs,
By
This review is from: Fig Heaven: 70 Recipes for the World's Most Luscious Fruit (Hardcover)
An absolutely incredible book on figs - from the mythical and biblical history to the botany and cultivation to the recipes, Fig Heaven is the definitive fig cookbook. For those of us without access to fresh figs on a regular (if ever) basis, Simmons supplies recipes that utilize a number of dried figs that are available year round in most larger grocery and specialty stores. Recipes are easy to follow and very good! From simple salads, desserts and even preserves to my favorite dinner (chicken, couscous, and dried fig salad with toasted almonds)Simmons covers a range of tastes and styles. A fabulous gift book, especially if you can give it along with a young fig tree! Perfect for a new home owner or newlywed!

After buying a house with a large fig tree in the winter, my wife and I were astounded to see the size of the crop that appeared come the summer. So what do you do after you've begged all of your friends to come over and take bags of figs home, made fig-strawberry jam, eaten figs with cheese until you can't any more, and still have piles on the tree and higher piles on the ground? You run out and buy the Fig Heaven cookbook of course! With 70 excellent recipes, you will surely find many an excellent idea, from fig pinenut pasta to fig, green tomato, purple onion salad. Of course, you will still have enough figs so that your friends can take home all they want, but you will also fill your summer table with delectable dishes!

What a wonderful book to add to my cookbook collection. Frest figs are not plentiful where I live but I love them! Now, thanks to this great book, I now have many inventive and delicious ways to prepare this fruit, dried or fresh-all year round! Kudos to Marie Sommons!

I think I died and went to Fig Heaven!,

Marie Simmons has a hit on her hands. Anyone who likes figs should own this book. Anyone who loves figs needs this book. Anyone who says they hate or don't like figs hasn't really given them a fair chance. My spouse was an anti fig person until I made the Fresh Fig Tart. Now she knows that figs can be so heavenly.
We have a fig tree and I wasn't too sure what I would do with all of those figs, especially if I was the only one eating them. From super sweet to super savory this book has something for every palate. Easy, straight forward recipes. I highly recommend this book. [...]

Great Book, Great Author,
This review is from: Fig Heaven: 70 Recipes for the World's Most Luscious Fruit (Hardcover)
I attended a class taught by the author of this book that included 6 different fig recipes. All were delicious, and Marie Simmons clearly knows her stuff. We were served tasting portions of 6 different recipes, and I ate every bite (which is rare for me, because I am fairly picky about food). I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves figs (or even those who, like me, find them too sweet and oddly textured when fresh). The savory, cooked fig recipes were amazing. We had pork tenderloin with a fig marsala sauce, and I could have eaten that all day. If you have a fig tree, this book is a must-have for your kitchen!

Marie Simmons has created a beautiful homage to the lowly FIG, and takes us to heaven with 70 creative lovesongs of recipes using the fig. From homemade fig newtons to figs in rice and with quinoa, who knew there was so much to do with the fig? Because we are blessed with 2 figs in our backyard, the book provided instructions for a new passion: cooking with figs! Heavenly, indeed!

This focused book provides clear, easy-to-follow recipes that really show off the wonderful flavor of figs. There's a variety of recipes - appetizers, salads, savory entrees, sweet desserts. Everything we've tried so far has been great! There is also an interesting introduction about the history, botany and cultivation of figs and a list of the many varieties. If, like me you love figs, I strongly recommend this book. We recently purchased a second copy for a friend who has a fig tree and never knew how to use all the fruit. Now she does!

This is a great book when you can get your hands on fresh figs or better... grow them yourself. Marie Simmons enthusiasm can be felt throughout this book. Nevertheless it is still a usefull cookbook as well containing 70 recipes, the vast majority are simple to cook and delicious. I have created a website on figs (in Dutch) www.vijg.nl and this is a great resource for additional information on this wonderful fruit. Highly recommended!

This book is full of good ideas for using fruit in everything you make. I have substituted cherries or dried apricots for figs at some point. Be realistic when you buy this book...who can eat that many figs?
