This 112 page book is a sewing book that I know you will enjoy. On the crest of the 'new wave' of sewing, Joanna imprints her individual style on numerous items for the home. Make quilts, table settings, aprons, pin cushions and a lot more. Discover how to personalize your home with these beautiful projects. Clear instructions, including the basics of sewing and applique are included. There are also large templates for the quilts and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. This book grabbed me as soon as I saw the cover, and then kept me hooked all the way through! I usually see "sewing" in the title and skip it because I assume that it will be like more crafty than quilty. One look at the cover of Fresh Vintage Sewing and I had a sneaking suspicion that this book would break that stereotype for me. I saw the adorable pincushions and beautiful quilt on the cover and I was pulled in for more!

The contents are broken up into beautiful vignettes, such as Front Porch Welcome and Kitchen Comforts, with beautiful pictures to give you an idea of the style of that section. There is also a wonderful introduction by Joanna that touches on why many of us love fabric and her explanation of what fresh vintage means to her.
I was immediately drawn to the many wonderful and creative pincushions she had in the book, from garden fruits and vegetables to birds and their eggs. There are also several gorgeous quilts, cute aprons, kitchen accessories, table settings, cushions, and bedroom and desk accessories. There are so many unique little touches to use fabric in beautiful ways all over your home.

If I get started now, I could make several of the pincushions and sachets throughout the year and be ready for gift giving next Christmas! What quilter doesn't love a handmade gift? I also think that I need some cute summery placemats, and the ones in this book fit the bill. They also have the cute pocket that will hold the silverware in place. --connectingthreads.com

I purchased this book on a suggestion from a friend who raved about this
book, but who likes a very different genre quilting style than myself. I was very pleasantly Surprised when I looked through it and started noting one by one all the projects that I was considering for a first project to start making. I love Hand Quilting and Hand Applique alot, and there are so many projects to make that involve Applique that are VERY UNIQUE and BEAUTIFUL. They have all the templates right there in full size, wonderful instructions, a number of suggested projects, and a number of projects that you could make in a day or just a few. Projects that you can take on the go, to the doctors office or while waiting. I also love the VERY UNIQUE SHAPES! I was just all around Amazed, which I rarely am. Honestly a very worth while and recommended Book for any Quilter, Appliquer, or Sewer!

If you are looking for a quilting book full of quilts, this is not the one you should get. If you are looking for quilts plus pillows, sachets, aprons, tablecloths, pin cushions and small decorations to sew, then FRESH VINTAGE SEWING is for you.

The first section, like all good quilt books, gives an overview of basic things such as color and fabric selection, cutting and piecing methods and appliqué tips. Interspersed in this section are extra tips which are set off in tan colored boxes.

Each project provides a photo, a paragraph about the subject and a materials and cutting list. Finished size measurements are also given. The instructions on how to put the project together come with plenty of graphics so you can see as well as read what you are to do. Assembling directions are next and finally the finishing. This last is left up to you with the statement of "quilt as desired".

If templates are needed, as for the appliqués, they are provided at full size. You don't have to run out to the copier's before you start which is a nice touch. If you are looking to start your Christmas presents for 2010 early, this would be a good book to get as the variety of projects is so varied.
