This is a Metrosexual's Nightmare,
This review is from: Fighter (Hardcover)
Superb, well-constructed and well-written story. Underlying themes clearly reminded me of Palahniuk's Fight Club. (However, this is no imitation.) There is a subtle complexity to the characters that keeps the reader off balance throughout and unable to predict the book's outcome. I can't remember another book where I found myself to be laughing one paragraph, and recoiling the next. This book would make a great, (albeit gruesome) movie. Excellent effort.

Hard Fought Book,
By Brian Murphy (Tampa, FL.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fighter (Hardcover)
As stated in previous reviews, fans of Fight Club and Chuck Palahniuk will like this story. With that being said, nothing too terribly original here but nonetheless an exciting and very entertaining read. The story moves quickly and smoothly but at the same time not losing it's underlining theme of self realization and what it means to find one's true calling in life. "Are we products of our upbringings and/or our environment or can one "fight" his way out of this mold and find his true being?" This general question along with some extremely gritty and action packed fight scenes make this a gripping and meaningful read. There was good character development and acute attention to the bare-knuckle/street fight scenes. The main character roughing up a paintball opponent was hilarious but a very brutal scene that one can picture themselves in. Warning: this book is not for the squeamish. But to show some depth and transition, the author jabs in some darkly funny quotes and stories that help relay the theme but in a different shed of light. This is definitely a raucous weekend read that will have you have you saying/thinking "I didn't hear no bell ring" a-la Rocky V.

I'm not well-versed in the boxing/combat lexicon, although I do count the WWE as one of my favorite soaps and I've seen a handful of movies with this book's premise, but the book is written in a great way that is recognizable to those in-the-know and relatable to those who aren't.The character are well written, the relationships cliche. This isn't a book that's going to stick with you but it a great selection for the sub-genre.

Craig has a unique voice, one that keeps your attention, and tells you such great stories. I loved THE FIGHTER from start to finish. If you like this, also check out his short story collection, RUST AND BONE. Great job Craig.

He's no Palahniuk (at least not yet),

This review is from: Fighter (Hardcover)
Davidson has a wonderful talent for making scenes of violence come alive, but he does not yet have a similar skill at character development or dialogue. Those hoping for another Chuck Palahniuk will need to look elsewhere, or wait for the relatively young Davidson (born in 1976) to hone his craft a bit more.

The descriptive nature of this book makes it as entertaining as any fight I've seen in real life.

I do not know how to even begin my review. The Fighter by Craig Davidson is a masterpiece work of fiction. It is not for the weak, this book will disturb you. Any book that makes me feel uncomfortable is worth my money. Boxing gives these characters something to live for, it makes them who they are. Read this book, I promise you will enjoy it. I am a better person after reading The Fighter.

Should Be Better,

This review is from: Fighter (Hardcover)
Ultimately i found The Fighter to be a bit frustrating. All the peices were there to make a great story. Unfortunatly, the author is just not that talented. The character development is solid, however, the characters are fairly boring and predictable. The main story itself always seems distant and the main character really never get into it. I do not recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Chuck Palaniuk, Will Christopher Baer, ect. You will find it way too bland. However, if you usually read Oprahs book club books then this may seem exciting.
