3.0 out of 5 stars aka 'The Fighting Chance', July 11, 2009

THE FIGHTER is one several 1980s made-for-TV pictures that starred Gregory Harrison. Perhaps its greatest interest is an appearance by Robert Englund just one year before he started his famous Elm St. run as Freddie Krueger. Also here in an uncredited cameo is amateur pugilist Ray Notaro Jr. He additionally acted as boxing advisor for Harrison. Ray's only other screen role was as one of the ring opponents in ROCKY III (1982).

SYNOPSIS--
Vietnam vet Merle Banks (Harrison) loses his job when the local mill closes and is embarrased to be a low-paying bellhop. After Merle wins an amateur match, he enters a boxing contest with a $10,000 grand prize. Merle's wife Rindy (O'Connor) strongly objects to this pursuit of a ring career so she takes a position at a beauty salon.

The irritated Merle wants to be the family's sole breadwinner. He works out his anger in the squared circle and by so doing becomes a winning boxer. As Merle gets closer to that big payout he also takes a lot of physical punishment. Then on the night of the championship bout, pregnant Rindy goes into labor....
