Amazon.com Review

Fighter Squadron puts players in the cockpits of several World War II planes to help fight a virtual battle for the skies. All the usual suspects are included, such as the American P-51 Mustang, the German FW-190, and the British Spitfire, but Fighter Squadron also lets players pilot bombers--something few World War II flight simulators do. You can hop between crew positions while in flight, so you can guide the plane to its target as pilot, drop your bombs as the bombardier, or fend off enemy fighters as a gunner. It's also possible to switch control to any plane during a mission, so if things are getting a little hairy in your Lancaster bomber you can immediately jump into a nearby fighter to clear the air of marauding fighters.

Fighter Squadron was supposed to have the most accurate flight physics and damage model ever produced, but the released version stalled far short of that lofty goal. If you haven't the patience to download and apply software patches from the Web, this fledgling sim just won't soar. But once the patches are installed, Fighter Squadron shapes up to become one of the premier WWII flight simulators--especially for multiplayer dogfights. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Plenty of planes, including bombers
  • Ability to switch to any plane in the air means players are always in the thick of the action
  • Fun online multiplayer dogfighting
Cons:
  • Needs some serious patching to correct flaws in the physics model
  • Player can't see far enough into the horizon without tweaking some advanced options

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Potential, February 15, 2000
This review is from: Fighter Squadron (CD-ROM)
Don't judge this Simulation by the version that you install "out of the box", for this is just a fraction of it's potential. Fighter Squadron really shines in one "streak of genius", commonly known as: Open Plane. With Open Plane it's possible to create new planes, modify flight characteristics, introduce new ground vehicles etc. Furthermore you can create your own custom skins for all planes available.

Go here: fightersquadron to get an update on new planes etc, that other users have already completed. (amoungst these are several WWI planes!, the Fw-190D-9, Mosquito and even a Flying Cow! :)

General Review: Many people name "European Air War" (EAW) as their favorite Flightsim. I have both Sims and favour "Fighter Squadron" (FS) in several aspects:

1.) Clouds: FS is the first(?) Sim to actually implement clouds realistically, speak: U can actually fly through them, hide in them - or lose sight of your bogie.. ;)

2.) Weather: EAW offers some nice settings, but only for the single missions - Why can't the "dusk or dawn" settings be used in the campaign? FS has beautiful weather settings throughout

3.) Terrain: EAW's vision of Europe seems to be of a flat countryside from Calais to Berlin, whereas FS has a more realistic "three dimensional" approach :)

4.) Cockpit Views: Ok, I must admit... I'm a so-called "hardcore" sim-pilot. When it comes to cockpits I want realistic views - not what EAW has to offer. In EAW there is no Cockpit Armor/Seat to block your 6 O'Clock view. Terrible! Why all the fuss you might think? Well think about it this way... You have a flightsim that lets you fly a collection of different planes, that all behave differently according to their flightmodel. This means every plane offers different advantages/drawbacks that effect your tactics. Well, dosen't the visibilty from within your cockpit have a great effect too? The Spitfire may be a great plane but the rear-view is rather bad compared to the Fw-190 for example. In short: FS wins by miles in this department.

3.0 out of 5 stars so much promised, June 7, 2000

don banning (San Francisco, Ca, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fighter Squadron (CD-ROM)
I first found this sim on these pages, after reading the reviews I decided to purchase the program and eagerly awaited its arrival. It's been downhill eversince. I could not get the targeting to work and the toggle views were not fast enough for me to catch a glimpse of say an Me 262. I have tried a number of times to get activision to tell me what I needed to make this work , I own a new computer and I have enough memory and speed,it has been one month since I started to contact activision and their response so far is to download a driver that I already have. Now they suggest a new voodoo 3 but dont specify which voodoo 3 series. I am truly disapointed in the program and am sorry I purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars FS:SDOE - The sim that wouldnt die., April 5, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Fighter Squadron (CD-ROM)
Panned by critics from the beginning (I believe I read one good review). Six years after its release in 1999 this sim still has a solid following. Parsoft has allowed controlled access to the code, so the sim with the patch only loosly resembles the original. People who bought it and put it down originally are always amazed at what has been done with this versitile software.

Add ons include over 45 WWI planes, 150 WWII planes, Many of Germanys "Secret Weapons" planes and more!

In 50+ years, I have never had a better return on my entertainment dollar.
