Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Loren W. Christensen has been studying the martial arts since 1965. This is Mr. Christensens 11th book on the fighting arts. Mr. Christensens experience in law enforcement began in 1967 when he served in the army as a military policeman in the United States and in Vietnam. He joined the Portland, Oregon Police Bureau in 1972 and while still a rookie on probation, he began teaching defensive tactics to officers. Over the years, he worked the training unit, the gang unit, dignitary body guarding, and all the precincts as a street officer. He is now a full-time writer and a teacher of realistic martial arts to citizens and people in law enforcement.

More About the Author

Mr. Christensen began training in the martial arts in 1965 and continues to this day. Over the years he has earned a total of 11 black belts, eight in karate, two in jujitsu and one in arnis. As a result of his tour in Vietnam and nearly three decades in law enforcement, Mr. Christensen's focus in the martial arts - writing, teaching and training - has always been on street survival, not competition. He has starred in seven martial arts training videos.

In August of 2011, Mr. Christensen was inducted into the martial arts Masters Hall of Fame in Anaheim, California, receiving The Golden Life Achievement Award.

As a professional writer since 1978, Mr. Christensen has penned 46 published books with five publishers, dozens of magazine articles, and edited a police newspaper for nearly eight years. He has written on the martial arts, missing children, street gangs, school shootings, workplace violence, riots, police-involved shootings, nutrition, exercise, prostitution, and various street subcultures. His first first fiction--Dukkha: An Eye for an Eye--was recently published by YMAA Publications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive!, September 19, 2000
By
CZ Coyote (Enoch, UT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fighters Fact Book (Paperback)
I have been in martial arts a short 8 years. Even prior to that time, I had collected a number of training and self defense books. This one is easily the best for training! Although the focus is on more realistic self defense applications, the treatment is broad and addresses fitness and sport applications as well! The writting style is both knowledgeable and humble. The author shows humor about his experience and does not come off as a "know-it-all", as many martial arts writers do.

I read 2/3 of the book the first night!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tons of Info, May 22, 2000
This review is from: Fighters Fact Book (Paperback)
I've collected martial arts books for several years and I've found this to be one of the best if not the best. Unlike other martial arts writers whose books in which you may find a couple things of value, Loren Christensen always gives you your moneys worth. Fighter's Fact Book is huge - like the subtitle says, it's got over 400 techniques and drills in it. Even those things I have seen before, Christensen has a way of making them seen fresh and unique, so that you learn something new. There was lots of new material, too, things I've never seen or thought of, especially street survival fighting.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY Recommended., July 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fighters Fact Book (Paperback)
This book is a very thorough, very practical approach to self defense. It contains ideas that I would have never thought of on my own. Not only does the author include all of his years of experience as an instructor and a cop, but he adds drills and concepts from many other experienced instructors. It is a thick book that covers many subjects from different angles. As with Christensen's other books, the ideas and applications in this book are kept on a simple level and are extremely practical. For anyone who is serious about self defense and martial arts, this book is a must-have.
