Book Description

July 1, 1996 0942612345 978-0942612349 0
On 20 December 1944, the industry was asked to enter a design competition for a 105,000 pound patrol boat powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radials. In January 1945, the proposal was amended to include anti-shipping, anti-submarine, and air-search and rescue. Ultimately, the project was cancelled when the submitted designs were deemed marginally superior to existing aircraft. The concept was resurrected on 27 December 1945 in the form of a 165,000 pound flying boat with improved hull design and four turboprop engines to significantly improve performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Naval Fighters book, November 6, 2009

This review is from: Naval Fighters Number Thirty-Four Convair XP5Y-1 & R3Y-1/-2 Tradewind (Paperback)
This Naval Fighters book is a 8-1/2" x 11", 120 page, square bound card cover. Color is restricted to the front and rear covers.

It covers three closely related aircraft types the Convair XP5Y-1, R3Y-1, and R3Y-2. The Naval Fighters format really shines when the aircraft covered was only produced in small numbers as is the case here.

The text by publisher Steve Ginter follows his standard routine. A brief design and development history is give. Then there are two reminiscences by former pilots. There is a brief service history. Additionally, there is a nice description of the R3Y beaching cradle. There are plastic kit reviews and a brief description of further Convair flying boat proposals.

The strength of the book is the large selection of black and white photographs and contemporary technical manual illustrations. Reproduction is very good and the photos include a large number of interior and detailed shots as well as full aircraft portraits.

All in all, the best reference available and likely the best for a long time to come for this late example of the almost extinct flying boat.
