He was a very effective NHL player, not just as a tough guy, but part of a great checking line with the Canadiens.

Great read - finished in 2 days. Very honest portrayal of growing up in Boston and in the NHL. Great read even if you are not a hockey fan. As someone who grew up a mile from Chris and loved the game it is even better. Chris discusses the code of fighters in hockey and a similar one outside the game, namely he didn't fight anyone who didn't want to fight or who was a bully. I found his discussion of his post professional hockey career and how it spiraled out of control interesting as well. Recommended to many friends already.

I enjoyed this.book. I wish more time was spent on his struggles with alcohol with drugs instead of his career in hockey.

I've been aware of Chris Nilan as a character for a long time, having grown up a Bruins fan in the late 70s, early 80s. It was truly fascinating to see this Boston kid wearing a Canadiens sweater and thriving not only as an enforcer, but as an occasional offensive threat and part of wildly effective checking line. This book provides a remarkable account of Chris' early childhood, his formative years and his curious ascension to the highest professional level of hockey - and thriving at that level - winning a Stanley Cup, playing in the Canada Cup and getting named to an All Star team. The book is well written and gives the reader a real sense of what is was like to grow up as Chris Nilan - what he was thinking, what he was feeling and the challenges he faced and thankfully eventually overcame. I hope Chris' recovery is long-lived and that the peace and stability he has achieved continues.

I really enjoyed reading this book. He certainly didn't hold anything back. I found that that a few events were too inclusive and detailed. I would recommend reading.

This is for all hockey lovers. Really a very personal story about a man's life growing up in Boston, playing professional hockey and battling the addictive substances.

Being a city kid from Boston and the same age as Chris, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the story that Chris told. I recommend it for everyone based on the life lessons told and the courage and tenacity in over coming obstacles and challenges and getting back up and fighting through when knocked down. Only wish we had drafted Chris as a "B" vs the dreaded HABS. I also wish he had the opportunity to coach the providence "B's" to extend his stay with the Bruins. But knowing Chris's story and struggles he is probably better off residing in Montreal. Great book Knuckles, thanks for sharing your story and for telling it like it was and not pulling any punches. JB from JP.
