Hitler, Stalin and Roosevelt, Unholy Triad, February 28, 2009
This review is from: Fighting Evil with the Help of Satan: (President Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, 1939-1945) (Paperback)
This is a rather unique and enlightening exploration of the relationship between these three men who nearly simultaneously came to power during a time of both worldwide political and economic instability. Dr. Gounev examines the inevitable interrelationships which developed between these men and their visions of the world. Similarities as well as character differences emerge. Choosing between Hitler and Stalin to support is the source of the book title with Roosevelt playing the part of Dr. Faustus. Roosevelt was early to discern the evil within, and the threat of, Hitler; he was far less astute in evaluating Stalin (a far more devious devil), largely because of his own inflated ego, believing he could charm even Satan! Churchill was, of course, a major player and is not overlooked in this analysis.
It is now, about 70 years later, that we, the readers, have the luxury of historical hindsight upon which to base our evaluations. History examined and written too soon tends toward myopic interpretation: written too late, renders many eye-witness accounts, as well as written documents, to be irretrievably lost or destroyed. In short, perspective is compromised. The timing for this book is near optimal. For those who seek a dry, clinical study this is not their optimal choice (I am not sure what that might be.) This book, while scholarly, retains a great deal of conversational connectivity with the readers as Dr. Gounev leads them through his analytical and fact-based conclusions, bolstered by his personal experiences in living, studying, interviewing or just conversing with people who lived through the Stalin and post-Stalin era behind the "iron curtain".
On the negative side, the book is riddled with typographical and grammatical problems which are in need of correction. This is an issue of presentation as opposed to substance and should not deter serious seekers of knowledge. For this reason I withhold one star.

Major Player WWII, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Fighting Evil with the Help of Satan: (President Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, 1939-1945) (Paperback)
This historical treatise analyses the roles played by FDR, Hitler and Churchill during WWII with Stalin as the ultimate manipulator. FDR's fear of Hitler caused him to lose sight of the real devil - Stalin. In so doing, Stalin was able to take control of the countries that came under the Iron Curtain. It is a must read for all serious students of history and political science. Ironically, we are seeing a similar situation today as our leaders do not see the real devil. Will history repeat itself?
