Editorial Review

Similar to Syphon Filter for the PlayStation, Fighting Force 2 puts players in the role of a cyber-enhanced cop of the future that is trained to infiltrate evil research and development facilities, destroy their work, and clear out any and all opposition.

Fighting Force 2 has some of the biggest levels around, giving main character Hawk Manson the opportunity to explore multiple floors, smash through walls, and break almost anything in search of keys to new areas. Levels are filled with enemies whom Hawk can defeat with one of 20 weapons including rifles, knives, and sledgehammers. Weapons can be attained through the destruction of cabinets, soda machines, and crates.

Originally a PlayStation game, the transition to the Dreamcast hasn't exactly been a smooth one. Frankly, Fighting Force 2 has been transformed from a good game into an average one due to this version's poor player controls. Improved graphics are welcome, but now it's harder to position Hawk for a fight. The PlayStation version is definitely the more desirable of the two. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Improved graphics over the PlayStation version
Cons:
  • Mucky controls take away from what was a good game

GameSpot Review

If you're lucky, you don't remember the original Fighting Force. The game tried to resurrect the Final Fight-style game on the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation by providing scads of bad guys you could beat by simply pounding on the punch button until everyone was dead. To put it bluntly, the first Fighting Force was not a good game. Fighting Force 2 takes the same basic beat-'em-up ethic and melds it with a pinch of Lara Croftian camera work and a smidgen of Metal Gear-esque espionage. The resulting game is better than the original, but it still comes off as an incredibly dull piece of software. The game sends you on several different missions, but your objective never really matters. You just plod through level after level, beating up anyone in your path and breaking all sorts of enemy equipment along the way. Just about anything you see can be destroyed if you hit it enough times. That's right, your character has the ability to make soda machines explode using only his bare fists. Heck, even an office chair will explode if you kick it hard enough. This is incredibly silly, especially when guns and health pickups start flying out of the copy machine you just stabbed with your knife. This is also just about the only cool element in the entire game. The enemies are painfully easy to defeat, especially given the copious amount of weapons you'll find along the way. Anything you can make explode could potentially contain another weapon for your inventory. Weapons include pistols (which our hero holds sideways like the true gangsta he is), a shotgun, knives, grenades, sledgehammers, pipes, and axes. The inventory is controlled by holding down a button and scrolling through your items until you find one you like - it's not a perfect scheme, but it works well enough. OK, the gameplay is weak and generic. The sound is occasionally sketchy and poorly mixed. The controls are a little too touchy. But at least the game is fairly pleasing to the eye. Though there are occasionally some clipping problems and some bad seams here and there, the game generally looks pretty good. The textures are crisp, and the animation is fluid. The behind-the-back camera works well, though it has lots of problems in small rooms. There's really nothing exciting about Fighting Force 2. The ease of gameplay makes it feel less like a game and more like an exercise. So you'll just wander around kicking everything in sight until sheer boredom forces you to turn the game off - which, depending on your tolerance level, will be anywhere from ten minutes to three hours. Yes, this game is better than the original Fighting Force - but that's really not saying much. Fighting Force 2 would make a decent rental, and it does fill a niche that until now hasn't been available on the Dreamcast, but it's mostly only good for a quick laugh at the exploding office chairs.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars Total opposite of first Fighting Force! Goldeneye for SEGA, December 1, 1999

It plays just like Goldeneye 007! It sports amazing graphics and runs smooth at 60 fps with no popup even with all the action. It is very unlike the 1st side scrolling Fighting Force, it plays a lot like Metal Gear Solid because sometimes you have to sneak instead of straight on kill everybody in sight. It has multiplayer but I have not played it. Bottom Line: amazing game, good graphics, lots of action, cool weapons (awesome sniper), amazing frame rate, and multiplayer! Fans of Goldeneye and Metal Gear check it out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Fighting force II, December 25, 1999

Wow, what an immense dissapointment this game turned out to be. The good folks at Eidos are responsible for some outstanding games--the brilliant "Tomb Raider" being among their finest. They really dropped the ball this time. Fighting Force II is a complete waste of time and money--this isn't even worth the price of a rental--not even if you have a coupon for a free rental! Let me summarize briefly: sloppy control, lackluster graphics, moronic artificial intelligence, boring level design, mediocre sound, and to top it off, it just isn't any fun beside all these problems. I have enormous patience with video games; sometimes one has to delve deeply into a game to appreciate its finer points. As far as I'm concerned, this game has no finer points. Not only is a poor game, it's got its share of bugs too. This is a good example of a company rushing a product to the X-mas market when it should have seen quite a bit more development time. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE

1.0 out of 5 stars Miserable, February 21, 2000

Gamers out there, beware! This could be the game that underutilizes the capabilities of DC more than any other game out there. For those deranged individuals who say it compares favorably with Metal Gear Solid, I say you're out of your mind (must've been posted by the chief FF2 programmer). Graphics are mediocre, game engine is underdeveloped, and the storyline is weak and unimaginative. Duke Nuke'em, Metal Gear, even Doom are vastly superior; heck, I'd rather play Tetris. I'm going to use the disc for a coaster.
