5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for children!!!
I have read this book for three years now with my fifth grade students. Every student has loved this book, many said it was the best book they ever read. The book makes war more real to my students by telling the story through the eyes of a child their own age. I feel the book is masterfully written, and contains a strong main character. 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!!!!!, June 16, 2002
A Kid's Review
The Fighting Ground by Avi is an awesome book. It went by minute by minute and always had you on the edge of your seat. It is very discriptive and easy to picture, it was like watching a movie in your mind. This is my first Avi book and definitely not my last. Anybody that would give this a bad review must have been reding another book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Fighting Ground, March 22, 2006
By
The Fighting Ground is a great book about a 15 years old boy named Jonathan who lived in Trenton, New Jersey. This book is set during the American Revolutionary war. America was fighting for its independence from England.

Jonathan is the only boy in his family who had not gone to war so he was waiting for his turn to go to war. Then one day, the bell rang at the Tavern and Jonathan went to go see what was happening. A Corporal was at the Tavern recruiting men to fight the Hessians (German Mercenaries serving for the British in the Revolution). The men of the town thought Jonathan was too young, but the Corporal took him any way. So Jonathan was on his way to war, the one thing he was dreaming of doing for almost half of his life.

This was a really good book with a sad middle and an exiting climax. If I could read this book a million and one more times I would. The detail in the book was exciting and I encourage every one to read The Fighting Ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Action Packed War Novel, February 3, 2003

Do you like action books? Then you should read the Fighting Ground. This is an action and heart warming story. When people are reading this book they just jump out of their seats.

This book sometimes made me feel really sad. The author of this book Avi, had alot of good supporting details in every paragraph. At the begining of this book it was somewhat a little boring, but towards the middle I started really getting into the book.

This is a very tender and action book. The major theme is to be informed before making decions. When Jonathan, a 13 year old boy, went to war without realizing what he would go through. Also Jonathan was not well informed to make the decisions to go to war. Jonathen's father was well informed because he went through the same thing.

Avi has a great imagination when he rights his books. Haveing a great imagination really brings the reader into the story. Avi is a talented wrighter and convinces the reader to keep on reading.

You will find this book irresistable if you love action. Kids of all ages would love this story. Dont miss this opportunity to learn about the war in 1778.

5.0 out of 5 stars plz read its amazing, February 23, 2005
A Kid's Review
The Fighting Ground by: Avi is an historical fiction book about a thirteen year old boy named Jonathon. The book takes place in 24 hour period during the American Revolution. The date is April 3, 1778 through April 4, 1778. On this particular day in Pennsylvania Jonathon disobeys his parents to fight in the war because back in the day all there was to do was fight. Jonathon's older brother is a soldier. Jonathon's dad got injured when he was a soldier so he won't let Jonathon fight and also thought he was young. Throughout the book Jonathon had many character traits. Jonathon is: kind, considerate, mature, thoughtful, smart, and brave. Jonathon's bravery impressed me the most because he was only thirteen and was taken as a hostage and had to go with the Hessians and not no a word of German so he didn't understand. I felt excited when I read this book because so many things would happen at once and it was only 24 hours. On a scale from one to ten I would rate this book an 8 1/2 because there were some boring spots. All in all, I think that The Fighting Ground by: Avi was an amazing book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action-Packed 24 Hours, September 17, 2009
"The Fighting Ground" is about a 12-year old boy who wants to be in the war. Jonathan had dreamed about fighting in the war his whole life, but he soon found out that going out to battle was not what he thought it would be. He had no idea that he would eventually be caught and taken prisoner by Hessians, German Soldiers. Can Jonathan escape from the Hessians and get home to his family?? Read this book to find out.

I like this book because it was written in the form of 24 hours. You will not see many books written through a time period and that's why I liked it. Each chapter was a block of time and every one had action in it. Sometimes it gets boring at certain parts but the rest is an adventure. I recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction and adventure. I would give this book a 4-star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornwall NY sixth grader, March 7, 2007
A Kid's Review
I am a sixth grader. The Fighting Ground is the second book I read by Avi. I like the way he writes. I especially like his descriptions of things. It puts a good picture in my mind.

The Fighting Ground is a mischievous cliffhanger that will keep you reading through the end. It is about a thirteen year old boy, Jonathan, who believes he is ready to go to war against the British. He longs to go to war for the glory. When it is time for battle, Jonathan runs to join the men. He doesn't realize that in just twenty-four hours his life will be forever changed; by the war, by the soldiers he befriended and by the horrible decisions he has to make. Is he ready for this?

My favorite part of this book was the actual battle. The description made me feel what Jonathan was feeling; like I was choking. Each minute kept my heart racing. I liked guessing what would happen next when I stopped reading. When I found out what happened during the battle, I was surprised. It was completely different than what I guessed.

My least favorite part was the very beginning. I didn't like it because it cut to the chase too fast. I would've liked to learn more about Jonathan and his family. By the fourth page, Jonathan was already joining the men to go to war. Nothing was said about his mother. Only a little was mentioned about his father. If I could change the beginning of the book, I would mention more about Jonathan, his family and his life.

I would recommend The Fighting Ground to people who are interested in a good, action packed adventure book. On a scale of one to ten, I would give this book a nine. There are only a few parts of the book that weren't interesting. The rest of it was great. I hope I can read another book by Avi.
