I purchased this as a gift because it was silly and I knew it would make my niece laugh. At this point the Boxing Nun has been around long enough to become a classic silly toy. I assume the toy is made for adults rather than children because grown-ups appreciate the irony and odd threat conveyed by the thought of a Boxing Nun. So, my purchase wasn't about finding an educational or durable toy for children, it was finding an amusing toy for an adult. So, whether you are pleased or not with the purchase will depend upon your particular gift requirements. I love the Nun.

I just remembered this great toy, which I once owned. It was given to me by Charles Whittier, the Congressional Research Service's specialist on Religion. To show you how odd humor is, Charles was actually offended to have been given this gift by a friend of his. Charles had a very serious attitude about religion, and though he had a great and wicked sense of humor, on certain matters there were no jokes to be made. This was one of my first realizations of how different the Catholic and Anglican ethos were in terms of humor. Catholic priests would joke about just about anything, but had an underlying rigidity. Anglicans like Charles were quite solemn about the form and ritual of their religion, but often quite liberal in many other ways. Well, Charles Whittier's Gestalt precluded him from enjoying this toy, and he was actually going to throw it out in a solemn protest, but I asked for it. It was hilarious. And I can resonate with those other reviewers here who say that the toy brings to mind Catholic School experiences with real boxing nuns, or in my case the ruler-wielding Sr. Ann in first grade. I was just reminiscing about Sr. Ann's ruler smacks at St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores the other day with my brother James. He is now writing beautiful Jewish liturgical music for High Holy Days at Jewish Temple as a composer. So our nun experiences felt pretty distant for both of us. I should have given this to him he would have loved it. Or I just should have kept it as an inspiration for more literary parries with reactionaries online.
