IF SHINS ALBUMS COULD TALK: A STORY IN 3 PARTS

ix. Introduction
Our story begins in Albuquerque, NM, in 1996. Brought together by a genuine love of pop music – and subsequent eschewal of college aspirations – singer/guitarist James Mercer, drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall and bassist Dave Hernandez formed The Shins. Mercer had taught himself to play the guitar as a teenager, while… Read more in Amazon's The Shins Store

3.0 out of 5 stars search for a better price guys, April 15, 2005

I spose you can consider me a Shins fanboy, considering I atually bought their vinyls. I own this EP, and I have to say I was quite dissapointed by the New Slang with iron & wine recording. However it was a good buy for the price I got it...$4 in Kims in NYC, now I know not everyone lives outside a large city, but I'd reccomend searching for a better price, because I would never fathom paying over $10 for a single. Just do a little searching, you'll find it for a better price.

PS: My nickname's not Shin because of 'The Shins', I'm not that much of a fanboy.

3.0 out of 5 stars B-Side and Live Recording., December 20, 2004
This review is from: Fighting in a Sack (Audio CD)
First, I'd like to let everyone know that this is not only available as an import, it is also available domestically at indie-only music stores.
The first track is "Fighting in a Sack," which is the exact same mix as the one off of the incredible album "Chutes Too Narrow."
"Baby Boomarang" is definitely a B-side track from "Chutes Too Narrow." It's not a bad song at all, but it does not fit with the feel and overall sound of the album itself. Songs like this will be played at full length concerts, since it has more power backing it than the album itself.
The final audio track, a live recording of "New Slang" is definitely designed to hook in people who have fallen in love with the movie and the sounds of "Garden State." I am a huge Iron&Wine fan, but was sorely disappointed by this track. Recorded at the semi-intimate Knitting Factory in LA, the recording lacks the proper mastering of a well-recorded live track, and although the CD single says Iron&Wine is featured on the track, it is not pronounced at all. Vocally he blends in with the band, and instrumentally was suspicioiusly absent.
This CD-single also includes a video for the song "So Says I," which is quite bizarre in that it is primitively computer animated and seems to profile 20th century Russia with the use of penguins. Not a great music video, but just another perk of this single.
Personally, I'm glad I have it for the song "Baby Boomerang," and I would recommend it to any true Shins fan, but for anyone else it will be a poor CD investment.

Loved them before they were "popular" and STILL love them! Nice little addition to your CD Collection.
