Not worth the money,
By D-Bear (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
I thought this book was going to be a great help in dressing my plus-size figure. What a disappointment! Although the pictures are clear, and seeing plus-size women who look lovely is inspiring, there is not much substance to this title to make it worth the money, and the cutesy captions are just plain silly. This is a simplified version of the "What Not to Wear" books and you'd be better off buying them even though they don't feature plus-sized figures. Most of the advice in this book could apply to any size woman as it is based on 4 basic body shapes that actually have nothing to do with size, but everything to do with genetics. Even a size 6 can have an hourglass figure, or a pear shaped bod. While they do mention accessories, very little if any attention is given to other aspects of style such as flattering hairstyles and lovely makeup that downplay problem areas and make the most of your best features.
There are many other plus-sized fashion guides, and even ones aimed at regular sizes, that are much more helpful such as "Always in Style" by Doris Pooser and "Plus Style." by Suzan Nanfeldt. In fact, check out Figure Magazine, (Geri Brin is the Editor), at least there you can find designer names and stores to find the clothes in.

Great Book for Plus Size Women,
By
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
I agree with the reviewer who said that this book is like "What Not to Wear" for full-figured women. The HOAX system of body-typing is really helpful in determining which clothes are most flattering to a particular figure. The only complaint that I have is that the book does not specify the body type of the models used. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

I just bought this book at Lane Bryant and I really like it. It is like "What Not to Wear" with a lot more specifics for the plus size body. I would definitely recommend this to friends.

Disappointing,

FIO was a disappointing read. There is one picture per page with a very brief description on why the outfit is basically appropriate or inappropriate. As a previous review mentioned this book is about dressing the body shapes rather than focusing on additional issues plus-sized women have. My main pet peeve is that the photos on the negative side are very craftily staged. The models slouch, frown, don't hold themselves proudly and seem to do all they can to look bad. While on the positive side, they are beaming, standing in a great pose, holding their head up, (sucking in their gut when they didn't on the opposite side). Many of the "inappropriate" outfits would look much better had they been given the same positive spin. Not a book to purchase, just take five minutes (that's all it takes) to read it at the library.

What Not to Wear-Plus Size Edition,
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
This book is alot like the What Not to Wear series, which I really love.
This book goes through several articles of clothing and reccommending them as something to wear or not to wear. While the book does not even come as close to going indepth as WNTW, it is overall an interesting flipping through-it will only take about 15 minutes to look-through. I mainly like the book because it is a WNTW (in simple terms) for plus size women. If you are not interested in buying it since it will only take a few minutes to flip through, at least try to look at a copy :)

Great!,
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
I bought this in the dollar bin and I am an aspiring fashion designer. It gave great advice, but "a REAL woman wouldn't x," in implication that a -real- woman was plus size, got borderline offensive. My small frame of 5'1" and 105 lbs due to having an autoimmune disease (Hashimoto's). I love big ladies. I loved this book's advice, but I don't appreciate snide remarks against slender women. It wasn't any different than a skinny-minny book making snide remarks against big women (who might not be able to help it due to hypothyroidism).
I've read a lot of fashion books like this one. This is unique in itself and I appreciated that. It had many photos which got their point across. As a fashion book, it was good!

i'm love fashion and clothes and love to shop, so i was happy to see all the style books that have come out recently. but i was dissapointed becuase so many of them have advice that doesn't work for bigger girls. so when i saw Figure It Out,i bought copies for me and my sister-- it has style tips that REALLY make us look good and REALLY fit our bodies well. and it has beautiful models! i love the book and it has changed the way we shop.

Figure it out for yourself,
By Jai (New England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
Wow, this book was incredibly bad. As usual, "plus-sized" models are beautiful women who are not very far away from being "normal-sized" (normal-sized?) women. Even the supposedly "bad" styles look good on them. The photographers and writers must've figured this out fast, so models wearing "bad" clothes also wear "sad" or "confused" or "pissed off" or "flippant" expressions. I guess this is to help the reader understand that since the model is "sad" wearing her clothes, she didn't "figure it out", as the title implies. "Oooo... look at my face... see how my face says "yo' mutha"? That means this skirt will look crappy on you!" Gah, what a waste of paper.

One of the best plus size books,
By
This review is from: Figure It Out!: The Real Woman's Guide to Great Style (Paperback)
I loved "Figure it out" by Geri Brin and Tish Jett. This book is great there is not a lot text to confuse the reader. By giving pictures, the reader is able to see what would work best for them. This is a book that should not be missed for all of us plus size girls.
