Smooth skating Keeping your balance while moving on the ice can be tricky at first! Learn to keep your back straight and knees bent. This position will help keep you from losing your balance. Keeping your knees bent also makes it easier to shift your weight from leg to leg as you skate across the ice. The leg on which you place your weight is your skating leg. The other leg is called your free leg.
