I will say this is a fantastic portable DAC+AMP, I don't think anything comes close to competing with the performance at this price. However I'm not really here to leave a review, just info I'd like to share that other reviewers may not have...

I can confirm that the Fiio E18 Kunlun works as a DAC flawlessly with my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Android phone running factory stock firmware (4.4.2). It works as a DAC with music apps I've tried including Spotify. [Play/Pause], [Previous Track], and [Next Track] also work in DAC mode on PC or Android with Spotify and other music apps I've tried.

On PC:
When I have the E18 connected to my PC by USB and I'm using it as an external DAC/Sound card (Windows detected driver as "USB Audio Device" "SPDIF Interface") I noticed an issue with distortion in producing notes (especially highs) in music, a substantial buzz/hiss at all times, and clipping in and out at times. Was very evident when running the Windows sound test through the Sound Playback Devices Control Panel. (plays a loud ding through each audio channel.) I noticed this on both my headphones and when using the line out into my speakers from the E18 DAC.

I found that the distortion/clipping/noise only occurred when the Fiio E18 was set to "PC IN" on the bottom 3-way slider switch. Setting the switch to "PHONE IN" resolved the issue completely. When set to "PC IN" the Fiio E18 will also charge over USB. It seems like there is a lot of noise produced by charging. I'm curious if the noise is actually coming from my PC and carried over the cable, or if the noise is produced simply by the Fiio being in charge mode. I don't have an extra cable to test this with right now, but I may try later.

So basically don't charge and listen at the same time, use PHONE IN instead of PC IN. Probably could of explained all that without being so verbose, but I like being specific to rule out questions...

This thing sounds fantastic and is super easy to use. Works great on all my computer and laptop as well. One thing though, if you want to use it with any kitkat android device (like my nexus 5) and want to connect via usb for full DAC instead of just the amp (can be done with headphone jack) then you need to install cyanogenmod 11. Stock kitkat does not support audio over usb. With cyanogenmod it works great though. Cheers!

I think this is the best DAC you can get for your android phone right now.
Some major drawbacks include:
USB port is on the bottom, making it difficult to carry in your pocket while in DAC mode.
The charge LED lights can be misleading
It can be difficult to figure out how to carry this and a phone - the provided rubber band will end up covering up your touchscreen. Some have used velcro but I can't bring myself to attach that to my devices.
I can't charge my source device while I use the DAC, listening time is limited to the audio source battery lifespan unless i switch to AMP only.

With the use of an EQ on the source device i have had some excellent listening using this device. I try my best to listen to only lossless files but even lower quality compression sounds great on this compared to direct signal from device headphone output.
I love that i can charge the DAC and use it at the same time.

If you are on the fence about getting a DAC/AMP for your phone then you might want to wait for a slightly better designed unit. If you are looking for one now, you will have a good experience with this device. Be sure to buy from an authorized vendor to be certain you get a genuine FiiO device. There are knock-offs out there.

Works like it should. I have no issues with it on my note 3. I can tell a big difference using this dac. It totally change how my Sennheiser ie80 sound (in a good way). Other perk of this device is it comes with packed with a 3500mah battery. So when you on the go and need a little juice, you can put it in power bank mode and charge your phone. Unfortunately you can't charge and use it as a dac at the same time. So it's one or the other.

EXCEPTIONAL! More than just a simple in-line amp, E18 adds dynamics range and even a perceived broadening of soundstage. Quality "in-hand" feel speaks to design / attention to detail. If you listen with good earbuds, they become great. Great earbuds become just, well, exceptional. Hard to go back to listening thru just the Droid. One slight shortcoming: the mini-to-mini USB plug (connects FiiO to phone) is too short, and needs to be about 6". Good luck finding one on line. Overall experience, WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Tested with:
HTC One (M7) + Shure SRH440
-Kind of a pain to get it work properly sometimes. I find that music apps (Power Amp, Google Music, BubbleUPnP) have to be closed before connecting the E18 or it would not send audio through the OTG cable. Kind of annoying. Works well now that I've figured that out. Sound is excellent, especially when playing high resolution audio files. Had no problem playing 24/192 flac files, but I am supposing that for those files the in phone apps are handling the decoding.

To keep the two units attached together I bought some velcro and attached the soft side to the back of my phone case (I use an Otterbox, so now it's enormously unattractive, but it's better than using attaching it directly to the phone) and the hook velcro section to the top of the E18. I couldn't abide the rubber bands blocking my screen. I used the rubber feet on the back of the E18 so it stays in one place and doesn't get all scratched up.

Nexus 7 (2013) + Shure SRH440
-Limited functionality. I found that the only way to get audio to play was by using the USB Audio Player app, which I don't like much about. Too much of a nuisance to bother with so I just use it with phone instead. Sound quality excellent (when functioning correctly).

Dell Desktop Computer + Vanatoo Transparent One desktop speakers
-I tested out a few different scenerios with this setup. Basically it boiled down to not being worth incorporating into my desktop setup. The Vanatoos have built in analog to digital converter (opposite of a DAC) and decodes digital audio. I tested the following connection options:

-Computer USB -> E18 Digital Coax -> Vanatoo Digital Coax In
Results were unsatisfactory due to the audio breaking up quite a lot.
