Updated 7/15/2012: It turns out, after reading posts by the Fiio representatives on the head-fi site, that there is rampant counterfeiting of this amplifier, and the product I bought matches the counterfeits being sold by some of Amazon's partners. Make certain that the partner you pick for buying Fiio products is an approved Fiio distributor.
When I listen to music I use my laptop and iPod, but never without this little guy anymore. It takes the sound from both sources, and makes it more smooth and clear. The only downside is that I don't want to even listen to music while it is charging! I might have to buy two of them and have them both charged and ready; which at this price is certainly possible!
Do yourself a favor and buy this bad boy if you enjoy your music and want to have the best sound possible from your headphones!
I feel I need to add a couple things that might have been misleading in the review. When I said I use the amp with my iPod, I am still using lossless audio files; not the 128kbps songs from iTunes. I usually listen to .flac or with the iPod I use .m4a which is apple lossless. If you use high quality headphones such as the Grado SR80i with this amp, they will greatly expose the poor quality music files.
First of all, to operate it is pretty simple, put your headphones in the "output" jack, and your source in the "input". Turn it on! I personally think the effects can be heard a little louder, if you turn down the sound on your playing device (computer, ipod...etc) and turn up the volume on the Amp. You can mess with the EQ by sliding the bar on the right (up) for just a second or less.
EQ setting suggestions:
Obviously, this depends on the song and genre, but here are some basics
Red (bass boost): This one is my second favorite (behind blue). However, if you like loud music, I believe this is the best one for you. Because the highs are not overly loud, and the mids aren't crazy crisp, you can turn this up very very loud without it ever getting "tinny" or screeching in your ear.
Blue (Mids boost): I think this one works best for most songs. It depends on your headphones, but my ATH M50's (Audio Technica) already have a good amount of bass and mids. However, this mids boost really lets you hear a lot of things you didn't notice before, and i think it results in the most clean, full sound of all the EQ's.
Pink (energy saver or somethin): Idk what this does. All I really notice it doing is slightyy turn down the volume. I assume it's to save battery, but I'm not sure.
No light (standard): Just a good old standard volume/crisp boost.
Hope that helps!
The E6 really improves bass response and over all clarity. The 1st equalizer setting is straight- and pretty much takes the existing signal and boosts it across the board. Like many have pointed out, the 2nd equalizer setting on this amp takes the bass and punches it way up - often sounding a bit muddy. I prefer the 3rd equalizer setting - the bass is still pronounced and elevated, but the mids and highs are kept crisp and clean. (The 4th setting is for high-output devices which I don't use.) The E6 comes with a dedicated cable to attach to any headphone jack and it works well. iPhone and iPod owners can also use an LOD cable (completely optional, sold separately for about $10) which provides a cleaner sound. (One thing to note in regards to iPhones and iPods: since these devices have a software-based equalizer built-in, you can further adjust your sound on top of the effects of the E6.)
Yes, you could use this with a pair of low-quality headphones, and the E6 will improve its sound. But the cost-to-benefit ratio favors buying quality headphones first, and then adding the E6 to the equation. This is because higher quality headphones have more ability to channel the sound that the E6 can deliver.
The device has two physical controls: a volume rocker, and a power switch. The power switch also controls the equalizer functions, and it can be locked down to prevent unwanted toggles. Yes, it sounds iffy, but in practice it does work.Read more ›
