The Bible series are great references.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cologon on several occasions, and he's got to be one of the smartest people I've ever met (and I've met some smart people!).

This is a great read if you are beginning or pro. The language is smooth to read. It is teachable and impressionable. Not like your regular programming jargon. Loved to read it. Also, the FileMaker 10 In Depth book is fun to read.

I have a collection of Filemaker books: Missing Manual, FileMaker In depth and videos by John Mark Osborne. All of them have great features.

Recently, I bought the FM Bible by Ray Cologon because I was not satisfied by the material I already had.
Ray's book solved many of the problems I was having in the Missing Manual book. For example the Missing Manual becomes hopelessly confusing in chapter 8, when the table occurrences - TO's, take bizarre names and the author starts using an antiquated `anchor buoy system'. The same concept of TO's was dealt with very elegantly by Ray.
Ray's book is readable and has a flow. He also saves us from the humor and witticism which, books like missing manual and `Dummy' series contain.

The author carefully explains why Filemaker is different from other databases programs, especially, the graph and the Table occurrences. This is vital to know for someone migrating from Microsoft Access etc.

You start building an Invoice solution early in the book. The solution slowly grows and matures over the chapters. Newbies may find it hard to understand early in the book, because the concepts of table and relationships come after you build the structure. Is this a cart before the horse? I think not because, once you have built the structure (at least went along with the instructions) you will find it easy to understand the deeper concepts.

The beauty of the book is in the concept of simplification. Some authors can simplify convoluted subjects and make the common man understand the concepts. Ray has that gift.

Ray was kind enough to answer my question. I was astonished to receive an answer from him promptly.

This is great book to have in your library.

I've been working professionally with FileMaker for a very long time, and Ray Cologon's books are some of the best resources I've ever read for FileMaker development. They cover all the territory that FileMaker now covers, and in a very orderly, approachable way. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who uses FileMaker, from enthusiasts to professional developers.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cologon on several occasions, and he's got to be one of the smartest people I've ever met (and I've met some smart people!). To have his knowledge and thoroughness at arm's reach at any time distilled down to a book is simply the best reference you could ask for, short of Ray sitting there himself.

As an owner of the previous book by this author (the FileMaker 9 Bible), I bought this book with high expectations - and I have not been disappointed. If anything, this book is even better value than the previous one, with extra content, new illustrations and added depth.

One thing I really appreciate is the way this book is organised, with the early chapters laying the foundations and introducing ideas, explaining terms and so on. Then as you get towards the middle of the book it really opens up into giving the deeper insights that sets it apart from other books on FileMaker. This is a book to keep by your side as you deal with the really challenging stuff.

Another aspect of the book that is excellent, is the wealth of examples, tips and insider explanations about how the program works. Like the previous book in this series, I found a gem or a useful technique on just about every page. The explanations are very clear, the language is straightforward and the examples are very useable. There is a lot of new material on the changes and new features of FileMaker 10 and it is eye-opening.

All in all, this is the very best book on FileMaker I have read - and is defintely an excellent technical reference by any standard. I got more out of reading this book than all the other books on FileMaker 10 together. Well worth waiting for.

Ray Cologon is an amazing FileMaker Pro Developer and writer. His writing is a "10" or 5 stars.

My issue is that the publisher printed the ENTIRE book pages using gray ink. Depending on the lighting where one may be reading, the view of the text ranges from not much, to not quite right. Meaning, the gray ink shade light intensity leaves MUCH to be desired.

My vote is black ink . . . . for books.FileMaker Pro 10 Bible

I make my living developing applications using FileMaker Pro. It's nice to find a book that can get you out of a jam or explain some nuance that might be obscure. Cologon has been around the FileMaker community long enough to know the nuances. So he talks about the basics as well as the technical side.

This has been an excellent tutorial and reference manual for version 10, but the concepts still hold true for 11 and 12. It would just be missing some of the updated functions for the newer versions.

After years of working with Access, I started working with Filemaker, using a different manual and eventually decided I needed a different approach to get under Filemaker's skin. This manual is excellent at helping me as I start to build a new application and reinforced everything that I had already learnt. The development options are extremely clearly described and I found it very easy to work with.
