Book Description

October 15, 1997
The world-famous natural beauty of the Philippines offers a unique architectural style to its inhabitants - one that takes basic ingredients, such as grass, shell, stone and wood - and moulds them into a living whole. "Filipino Style" takes a journey from the purely Filipino roots of Nipa huts (native grass huts) and Bahay na Bato (stone houses) to the fruits of trade with China and the colonial influences of Spanish architecture. This rich cultural diversity and American-influenced flair is the cocktail from which this remarkable style originates. Filipino furniture is developed in tandem with the architecture which surrounds it, made from the same materials, following identical responses to the environment. Today, this furniture is exported world-wide and Filipino wood carving and cane weave is just as likely to be found in a penthouse apartment in New York as it is to be found on any one of the 7,000 odd islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. Original and hugely successful, the Filipino style is portrayed in this spectacular work with brilliant colour photographs and perceptive commentary.

By A Customer
This review is from: Filipino Style (Hardcover)
Finally, a book on Traditional and Contemporary Philippine Interior Design by a reputable author/photographer. It will give the reader a good sense of Native Interiors to Traditional influences of Spanish-Colonial Interior Design and Architecture. Very superb photographs. Beautiful renderrings in the Furniture Dictionary.

This book is a must have for anyone interested in Philippine Architecture whether Filipino or not! It not only has beautiful pictures, but is informative-- covering topics such as historical fact, natural resources, and cultural influences. The architural styles featured truly depict Filipino originality and creativity from Spanish colonial times to the present Modern times. This book is definitely a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has wonderful photos on Filipino architecture., July 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Filipino Style (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Filipino architecture or Asian architecture in general. The photos are wonderful! I lived in the Philippines for 14 years and this book definitely took me to a trip down memory lane. Dive into this book and you can almost feel the warm breezes and sunshine of the Philippines. I only wish that they had included more photos of the Filipino Nipa Hut. But other than that, this book is fabulous! I've recommended this to a lot of my friends. Some of my favorite photos include the Tagaytay Highlands Club House and photos of the older "bahay na bato" (houses of stone) that are slowly disappearing from the Philippine landscape. I hope this book encourages the preservation of these Filipino architectural treasures.
