Biography

The Grateful Dead were a US psychedelic folk rock band led by Jerry Garcia. They were one of the cornerstones of 60’s counterculture.

Their career commenced in the spiritual home of the hippy, Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. They evolved from a band called The Warlocks, one of the bands to regularly play at Ken Kesey’s acid tests, where people would gather to tune in, turn on and drop out. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Dead at their best, December 1, 1999
This review is from: Live at Fillmore East (Audio CD)
The 69 Fillmore East show was one where the Dead only had an hour. They opened for Janis Joplin and had the daunting task of playing enough songs while still capturing all of the feeling of their lengthy and meandering concerts. The Mountians of the Moon into Dark Star into St. Stephen into The Eleven on the second disk is absolutly incredible, as is the Cryptical Envelopment into The Other One back to Cryptical Envelopment on the first disk. While it is disappointing that such a promising rendition of Cosmic Charlie, a personal favorite of mine, got cut of, this concert is a must have for your collection, wheter you're a veteran Deadhead or a 16 year old kid who got there too late, like myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diamonds from the nightfall, January 14, 2000
This review is from: Live at Fillmore East (Audio CD)
Honestly, I can't really remember disk one. I haven't heard it in quite some time and I don't feel qualified to speak about it's quality now. The main reason for this is because every time I grab for FILLMORE EAST 2/11/69 I grab the second disk. I'm not much of a fan of the song DUPREES DIAMOND BLUES, so I skip it and get right to MOUNTAINS... the transition out of MOUNTAINS is nice, but there are better ones on tape. What makes this a five-star set is the DARK STAR all the way through to FEEDBACK.

That section (and it's a sizeable section, well worth the money it costs to buy this set) is what the Dead was all about! This is the sort of creative, ensemble improvisation that I respect the Dead for. There is none of the boring, sloppy, directionless meandering that they became known for later in their career. Quite simply, DARK STAR through FEEDBACK is some of the best officially-released Dead that has been released so far. There are alot of Dead releases to skip over, but this is not one of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars nice look into early, early Dead, January 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Live at Fillmore East (Audio CD)
I think the first disc of this two CD set is worth three stars. It has an amazing version of "That's It For The Other One" and a fair version of one of my favorites with "Doin' That Rag". However, I'm sorry but I think their attempt at "Hey Jude" is pretty bad. However, disc two deserves five stars. The late show begins with "Dupree's Diamond Blues", trips into "Mountains of the Moon", dances into "Dark Star" and rocks straight through "St. Stephen". It concludes with a beautiful version of "We Bid You Goodnight". One complaint is that at the very end of this CD, we are teased into believing that we're about to hear an encore of "Cosmic Charlie", but the song is crudely killed in the middle. The sound quality on this isn't as good as some others, but considering it's from 1969... It kind of has a bootleg feel to it. Plus imaging being there, at the legendary "Fillmore East", waiting to see Janis Joplin, kind of adds something to it.
