5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Actors
"Read, read, read," says Schreibman and he might as well be talking about THE FILM DIRECTOR PREPARES, as essential to the actor as to anybody and everybody else who ever worked on a set. 3.0 out of 5 stars good yet misleading
I just got the Kindle download based on the reviews. There are NO illustrations and definitely No accompanying CD or software as indicated by many reviews. My question is how do reviews of the hard copy get on the Kindle review page and why is there no indication of the differences?

How much benefit will I get from this author remains to be seen, but this...

"Read, read, read," says Schreibman and he might as well be talking about THE FILM DIRECTOR PREPARES, as essential to the actor as to anybody and everybody else who ever worked on a set. This is the book -- fascinating and entirely accessible -- to afford each of us an extra dollop of confidence in approaching a role, a rehearsal, a conversation about how to play a scene; to give actors an understanding of why directors make the choices they do and how we can best serve the vision of the whole. Wish I'd had this book years and years ago and I'm so glad to have it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn the Rules to Break the Rules, March 19, 2007
By
Warren (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Practical and easy-to-grasp, this book breaks down directing to its most essential elements: the philosophy and the process. The book is a great starting guide for the newbie. Use it to learn just the fundamental principles of filmmaking, and then go out and discover your own principles.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK THAT IS INTERACTIVE, January 31, 2007
By
Michael (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This book is an entirely interactive book as it contains a CD-rom that has a 3d storyboarding software that makes it absolutely remarkable in being able to manipulate the images in the book to experiment with concepts and precepts that the author is knowingly speaking about. The Directors Guild of America calls this book the definitive book for directors and encourages not only those who are learning to direct but those who already direct to hacve this book in their library. It is told from a very easy and understandable perspective and full of practical stuff about telling stories, saving production time during production, working with talent, directing various forms of television and most of all what it means to do coverage to tell stories. This is one book that you must have!

2.0 out of 5 stars Useful information, poorly written, July 7, 2011
This book may be a comprehensive guide to directing, but it needed a good edit. Or any edit. It's so poorly written that I finally gave up reading it. I'm not just referring to the writing style. The text is larded with parenthetical comments, "footnotes" that should have been integrated into the text, and randomly italicized remarks. The author clearly knows his stuff. He may be a talented teacher and director. But this book is inaccessible. It's too bad, because all this information appears to be useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its a great book, BUT..., January 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book is a good read, there is a lot of potent information here, however some of the author's descriptions could use a few more illustrations; For example when he describes scenes from certain movies it can become confusing if you haven't seen each of those films. Never the less the book is a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL READING FOR ALL DIRECTORS, PARTICULARLY NOVICE, June 8, 2010
If you've never directed a film before or need to brush up on your technique, The Film Director Prepares will provide you with the confidence that it can be done. Myrl A. Schreibman is a veteran in the field, and the experience he shares can be summed up as 'directing is an intuitive and creative process'. The only bizarre characteristic of this book is that Myrl A. Schreibman advises against relying heavily on storyboards when directing, and yet the book includes a storyboard software.

In a nutshell, this is essential reading. As a new director who is in the process of directing my first feature film 'Six Lovers' - [...] - Myrl A. Schreibman's book is guiding me through the process. I also teach scriptwriting and script adaptation at university and now make reference to this book when advising my postgraduate students on the relationship between script writing, storyboards and directing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Film Director prepares: A Complete Guide to Directing for Film and TV, April 2, 2008
This unique book is one of the best Film and Television Directing books that promises satisfaction and truth. Myrl A. Schreibman is an authentic and creative author that incorporates wisdom throughout the book rather than regurgitating his knowledge. Experience is another thing that this book offers which creates a pragmatic platform for the reader that ultimately functions as motivation and inspiration. This book is a powerful tool for any beginning, intermediate, and even advanced student or professional of Film and Television Directing.
