This review is from: Filmmakers Series: Pump 'em Full of Lead! (Twayne's Filmmakers) (Paperback)
THIS BOOK TOUCHED ON EVERYTHING FROM THE ROOTS OF THE GANGSTER MOVIE TO DIFFERENT CULTURES IN THE GENRE ... SO COMPLETE... THE GANGSTER MOVIE BOOM OF THE 30'S AND 40'S TO FILM-NOIR THEN DETAILED INFORMATION FROM THE BOOM IN THE 90'S TO TARANTINO AND THE DIRECTION OF NEO-NOIR...VERY GOOD! THE ONLY PART THAT WAS POORLY WRITTEN AND A LITTLE CONFUSING WAS WHEN THE AUTHOR WROTE ABOUT THE FILM BOYZ N THE HOOD AND IT'S MAIN CHARACTER TRE , THEN FOLLOWED THAT WITH MENACE TO SOCIETY AND THE MAIN CHARACTER IS NAMED CAINE WHO THE AUTHOR REFERS TO SEVERAL TIMES AS TRE. GREAT BOOK!

This book is a very simple, yet detailed view of gangster films ranging from White Heat to Boyz in the Hood. It mentions almost all "gangster" films ever made, and expplains in detail about a dozen and a half.
If you feel like learning about old or new gangster films, this is an excellent book. It is also very good for research. |
