Tom Gunning is Professor of Art History, Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. He is the author of D.W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film: The Early Years at Biograph.

Lang's films are practically laid out on a couch and asked about their mothers. Psychologically interesting film analysys. I really enjoyed reading about the noir films because this brings much more depth to the viewing experience. Scarlet Street and House by the River are fascinating.
The author frustrates by digressing too much - Gunning often references earlier films and other reviewers - and the book could use more film stills for illustration. Recommended for in- depth enjoyment.
