Review

"One of the 10 Best Film Books of the year."
Recipient of the Merrill T. McCord Award, for Best Researched Film Book

This book is a must, not only for Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy (separately and together), but also movie musical fans. Eleanor Dugan has written a definitive, authoritative book. It's really essential.

This is head and shoulders above the usual "Films of" volumes. The reason is simply that it is beautifully written by someone who is an acknowledged expert on not only MacDonald and Eddy, but also on musical films in general. Ms. Dugan knows her stuff and her "historical overviews" are outstanding and well informed, giving us a vivid view of what was happening in cinema at the time. The author really impressed me with her grasp of the musical as a whole. The individual biographical sections on MacDonald and Eddy are wonderfully detailed and comprehensive.

The book reads easily, and at over 600 pages that's a remarkable achievement. You learn about MacDonald and Eddy as well as the development of the screen musical, and you are never bored. Ms. Dugan also did something quite stunning: She wrote long, detailed plots that had me reading, not skimming. She did what others fail to do: she made the plot recaps entertaining. She puts behind-the-scenes data within the plots, making it all the more interesting. I loved the way she handled these sections. I felt that if I missed even one word, I'd miss something of value.

Happily, Ms. Dugan resists the temptation to write as a fan. Even though it's clear she is enthusiastic about them, she is objective when it comes to their work. She contributes solid criticism about their films that is most enjoyable. Magnificently done. --Classic Images Magazine

There is only one word for this magnificent tribute to Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy - superlative!

Eleanor Knowles has compiled the alpha and omega of everything an admirer would want to know, whether it pertains to their individual films, or to the eight MGM films they made at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1935 to 1942.

The author diligently and exhaustively interviewed people who had worked with both stars, as well as searched archives and other resources.

The book is filled with never seen before photos, including publicity stills and on-the-set candids.

Each film of the famous duo (and their individual starring vehicles) has been meticulously and lovingly brought to life in a style that is eminently readable. No dry-as-dust writing here!

Also included is an exhaustive Discography by J. Peter Bergman that is a treasure of information about every recording Miss MacDonald and Mr. Eddy made, and data pertaining thereto.

If you're a person who loves Jeanette and/or Nelson, or a cinemaphile looking to learn more, you'll find it here!

All in all, a fascinating, highly enjoyable tribute to Jeanette and Nelson, true stars from Hollywood's Golden Past.

I am a Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy fan....I adore their movies.
I found Eleanor Knowles Dugan's book a delight to read. A meticulously researched book on Jeanette's and Nelson's lives and films.
Well worth the time and cost of this book. You will not be bored one moment with Eleanor's amazing knowledge of the cinema and of this enchanting duo who brought happiness to so many people during some hard times in our country. The book is full great photos of Jeanette and Nelson and publicity stills from their films along with cinema history of the time.

If I buy -and not just borrow- a book about films, it is because I want to read it more than one time - maybe over and over. I need to enjoy and savor the writing, learn something worth learning about, and put it down wanting to take it up again.

Whether or not you even like the stars or the films, Eleanor Knowles Dugan's "The Films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy" is that kind of a read. And because I research these films myself, I realize how wonderfully Ms.Dugan has put "the pieces" together. Her extensive knowledge, humor, ability to stand back and be objective about her subject, meticulous research, and her oh-so-easy-to-read writing style captured my interest and kept it throughout. I know I will pick it up again on rainy nights -to find myself back in those joyful moments when I can realize the world contains much more than cynicism and despair - and to 'hear' the songs and the voices that sang them.

Whether in biographical data, reviews, or plot summaries, Ms.Dugan has put her finger on the elemental reasons these movies and stars resonate in our collective memories. She has been wise in her individual film judgments, and creative in selecting "intakes and outtakes" for our enjoyment.

Besides all that, she has added many photos, a discography by J.Peter Bergman and Addenda by John Cocchi, extra references and other helps for future researchers and film buffs. AND -this re-edited paperback edition is easy to hold and flip through.

Brava!

Love the films of MacDonald and Eddy. They had the greatest voices together
and nobody could take their places in their films.

Eleanor Knowles Dugan's mammoth volume about the lives and careers of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy was an invaluable research tool when I wrote my 2-person stage play, NELSON AND JEANETTE.

No gossip. Just facts. If you want to know the true story of these two legendary performers, Dugan's meticulous work is the book you should have.
