Product Description

In Whitewash, a young girl named Helene is walking home from school with her brother when they are confronted by a street gang who paint her face with whitewash. The effect on Helene and her brother is devastating. But an outpouring of love and understanding from her family, her classmates and the community help Helene deal with what has happened. Inspired by actual events, Whitewash conveys a powerful message that transcends age and race, told in an entertaining way perfect for children of all ages. In wonderful animation, Champagne tells the true story of a young teen girl named Champagne whose mother is incarcerated for murder. Starring the voice of the real-life Champagne, this award-winning film shows how hope can spring forth even in the most challenging times.

I saw this title at the library and checked it out. Wow! Both of the features are very moving. The first one is the fact-based story of a young girl and her brother who are accosted on their way home from school. She's sprayed with white shoe polish. There's a subplot involving her brother's dealing with the attention she gets afterward and the guilt that he feels for having run away during the attack. I'd have liked to see the assailants punished in the film, but that wasn't really the focus.

The second involves a young lady describing her upbringing since her mother's incarceration. Champagne is very upbeat in her descriptions and helps the viewer to appreciate his or her advantages.

I liked the films very much.

Best films to show middle school students. I originally purchased this video for my video library, but thought it would best be served showing it to my students.
Although my students live in NYC, very rarely do they encounter "overt" prejudice. This was an eye opener for many of them. Whitewash - Thanks for deciding to illustrate the events of one students experience, so that I could share with other.
Champagne - The best! Often student are embarrassed to share about an incarcerated loved one, especially if that love one is a parent. This opened doors to a great dialogue, and provided explanations for behavior. Thank Champagne and the crew for sharing such a life-changing story. Her message was heard loud and clear.

This film stick with me all throughout my childhood and here I am 20 years later buying it off Amazon because it's that powerful... It in no way condones violence or the "eye for an eye" motto and I will definitely show my children.

Nothing special about this. Whitewash is pure garbage. I get the point behind it, but why must these types of film always be about the struggle of black people? I'm not racist, but don't really like being stereotyped as a bleach-white faced jerk.
