Each entry (arranged in alphabetical order) contains the year of release, production company, country of origin, director(s), producer(s), screenwriter(s), awards (if any), lead players and their character names, and a critical summary. These summaries range in length from 30 to 200 words and can be scathing (see the entry for The Quick and the Dead). In addition to the main entries, the book offers a four-page introduction that addresses the highlights and lowlights of the decade in film. The index is a master list of names and is more than 100 pages long.
So why, with free Web sources like The Internet Movie Database, would a library buy this book? The IMDb provides more information, many more search options and, based on a sample, covers all of the films listed in this title. What it does not provide, besides the Nowlans' commentary, is the 1990s perspective, which places each film within the context of other films of the decade. The Films of the Nineties is recommended for academic and public libraries that support a film studies curriculum. RBB
