Book Description

0786409746 978-0786409747 July 2001
The 1990s saw numerous actors break onto the scene in the movie industry and achieve great fame, while others received only little, if any, recognition. The 1990s also had blockbuster films that were not to be forgotten as well as bombs that were. This filmography, of course, has them all, good and bad. From Abilene to Zooman, over 3,000 feature-length English language films released between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1999, are presented. Each entry has alternate titles, running time, detailed cast and production credits, a synopsis, often including critical comments, and Academy Award nominees and winners.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Two established film authors follow up The Films of the Eighties (McFarland, 1991) with their new book on films of the nineties. This volume contains 3,268 entries for films released in theaters between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1999. Aside from excluding pornographic, documentary, and experimental films, the authors endeavor to be exhaustive but admit that some films may have been missed. However, they believe that they have captured all of the films that were "deemed worthy of being reviewed by some critic in some periodical."

Each entry (arranged in alphabetical order) contains the year of release, production company, country of origin, director(s), producer(s), screenwriter(s), awards (if any), lead players and their character names, and a critical summary. These summaries range in length from 30 to 200 words and can be scathing (see the entry for The Quick and the Dead). In addition to the main entries, the book offers a four-page introduction that addresses the highlights and lowlights of the decade in film. The index is a master list of names and is more than 100 pages long.

So why, with free Web sources like The Internet Movie Database, would a library buy this book? The IMDb provides more information, many more search options and, based on a sample, covers all of the films listed in this title. What it does not provide, besides the Nowlans' commentary, is the 1990s perspective, which places each film within the context of other films of the decade. The Films of the Nineties is recommended for academic and public libraries that support a film studies curriculum. RBB
