The list author says: "We've all seen bad movies. For every great film released, it seems like ten bad ones are released alongside it. Some of these bad films have redeeming qualities, such as being cheesy, self-aware, or even so-bad-it's good. However some films just get these terrible reputations that are undeserved and that's what this list is about: movies that most people classify as being bad or awful when they really are pretty decent films.
Expectations are the main cause of this. People get so caught up in the hype surrounding a film that once they finally see the film, there is no possible way it could ever live up to their insurmountable expectations. Most people never try to give said film a re-watch with more reasonable expectations, which is really a shame. More than once I hated a certain film but after seeing it a second time, I enjoyed it much more because I knew what to expect.
All of the following films currently have a rating of 50 or lower on Rotten Tomatoes and/or Metacritic, signifying a "bad" movie. This list is strictly my opinion and I'm sure there will be films on here that you loathe with all your heart. That is fine by me, I just ask that you hear me out and keep an open mind.
This list is subject to new additions as I watch or remember more supposedly "bad" movies."
"This is one I just don't understand. The cast is great (especially Samuel L. Jackson), the story is very interesting, the suspense and scares are thrilling, the set design and cinematography are excellent and the ideas espoused are thought-provoking. I highly recommend giving this one a watch if you like science fiction!"
"Derided for butchering its graphic novel source material, it succeeds as a far-fetched but very fun adventure film. Lots of action, a slightly steampunk setting, literary characters made cool, and some solid performances. While parts of the film are ridiculous (a huge sub in the canals of Venice??), it has a very Indiana Jones-ish sense of adventure that is quite infectious and hard to resist."
"The third attempt at making a good Punisher movie succeeds with bloody flying colors. Ray Stevenson acts exactly how The Punisher is supposed to: he violently kills all criminals without hesistation. The whole movie is a bullet-riddled bloodbath with a great villain and cool nods to the rest of the Punisher universe. If you're an action fan, don't miss it."
"Daredevil is a fairly competent superhero movie that does a decent job portraying the man without fear. Affleck is good as Daredevil, but miscast as Matt Murdock and I think this is why the film feels unbalanced. Colin Farrell overacts but nails Bullseye perfectly while Michael Clarke Duncan makes a solid Kingpin. The action is pretty good, if a bit shaky. I'd say it's worth a watch."
"Despised by many for using the Halloween name but having nothing to do with Michael Myers. Having a series about various spooky things happening on Halloween would've provided all sorts of cool possibilities, which is what III was trying to do. It's not a good film by any means, but worth a look for the atmosphere and that damn catchy Silver Shamrock tune!"
"This is a movie that knows how to have fun. Unlike The Lost World, it's just a good old fashioned thrill ride. The action is non-stop and the dinosaurs look fantastic, especially the pterosaurs. The movie has a very sly sense of humor too, which is very welcome and utilized well by the solid cast. While many see it as pointless (and damn that ending is abrupt), I think it's well worth your time."
"This is a great creature feature. People always give it crap because of the casting of J-Lo, Ice Cube and an over-the-top Jon Voight, plus its numerous plotholes (if an anaconda ate a human, it wouldn't be hungry again for weeks). Regardless it's really quite suspenseful and exciting, featuring some amazing special effects (both animatronic and CGI) and gorgeous scenery."
"EVERYONE hates this movie, but I find it to be a lot of fun. The banter between Smith and Kline is great, the steampunk gadgets (again?) are very cool, the action is pretty solid, the special effects are outstanding, and the performance by Kenneth Branaugh is crazy and memorable. If you can suspend your disbelief, this movie can be a heck of a lot of fun."
"Most people saw it as dumb but the inventive kills and amped up gore really pay off when combined with the suspenseful build-up. The traffic pile-up that starts the movie is a spectacular piece of carnage that is heart-poundingly intense (and shot beautifully using real cars and real crashes). Definitely one of the better modern horror films worth watching."
"It may devolve into a slasher in the second half (and a fairly good one actually), but the first half is solid sci-fi featuring some impressive special effects and devilish sense of mischief from Kevin Bacon. You may not want to admit it, but we can identify with Bacon's character - who hasn't fantasized about being invisible and messing with people or using it to your advantage? Makes ya think..."
"A disjointed but great horror-thriller. It was shelved for two years but director Renny Harlin still manages to deliver excitement and nastiness all around. The concept and setting is quite cool, affording some pretty macabre and creepy scenes while the characters die gruesomely original deaths. Special mention must go to the excellent cinematography that gives the film an unsettling atmosphere."
"A nice mix of sci-fi and horror. Jamie Lee Curtis is miscast but the concept of an electrical lifeform that uses a combination of human body parts and electronics to build killing machines is very cool, like a pseudo-Frankenstein. The movie is suspenseful and claustrophobic with some good gore and a creepy atmosphere. I'm not sure why this one gets so much flak - I enjoyed the hell out of it."
"Sure this movie didn't need to be made, but it tried admirably to recreate the fun feel of the show. It succeeds with its casting (except for Rosie) and impressive special effects/animatronics. It has a fun cartoony feel and the performances are well-done, especially John Goodman as Fred. The story is decent, nothing special. It's silly, but you could do a lot worse (Viva Rock Vegas anyone?)"
"Solid space terror that is a combination of Alien & Event Horizon (or alternatively, Dead Space). The claustrophobic setting coupled with the superb sound design and cinematography keeps you on the edge of your seat. The acting and story are suitably macabre, meshing well with the ample gore. Well worth checking out."
"While it isn't as good as Predator - one of my all-time favorites, it does a great job expanding the Predator mythology (weapons, spaceship, etc) and putting the Predator in a nifty new setting. It's entertaining as hell and Danny Glover does a decent job even if he can't compete with Schwarzenegger. Even with the release of Predators, I still find this film to be a solid sequel."
"While it was a huge box office bomb, this film does not deserve most of its criticism. Yes, the acting & dialogue can be bad at times but the epic scale of its story, action scenes/stunts, music and cinematography make it an exciting swashbuckler that can easily hold its own with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I'm not sure what kind of film people were expecting, but I say give it a shot."
""It's pretty much a remake of Escape From New York" is all you ever hear when you mention this movie. While it shares a similar premise, itÂ’s somewhat different and has lots of wildly interesting setpieces (Snake's attack on the motorcade, the deadly basketball game and the tsunami surfing with Peter Fonda all come to mind). ItÂ’s a lot of fun, plus Kurt Russell is just as cool as ever."
"This film has received so much hatred but in terms of PG-13 modern horror bullcrap, it's actually pretty refreshing. Sure it's predictable but it has a creepy atmosphere and a brilliant setting, lots of gore pulled off with practical effects (not CGI), nudity and an R rating. Horror-wise, you could do a lot worse. Give it a watch if there's nothing else on."
"I love the games from Konami, and while the film combines elements from games 1-3, it doesn't exactly do them justice. The monsters are manifestations of the character's fears, but in the film they're not manifestations at all. However, the film is visually stunning with an interesting story as well as impressive special effects and an incredible score. ItÂ’s not perfect, but it works."
"An eerie thriller in the vein of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. The film is gorgeous to look at with a subtle but effective score. The story balances its thrills and gets more sci-fi then you'd expect. It leaves certain things open to interpretation, which is refreshing these days. The cast is great, however Cameron Diaz struggles to keep her Southern accent in check. Well worth a watch."
"I'm not sure what audiences were expecting from a movie entitled "Your Highness". The marketing made it seem like a stoner comedy, but in reality it's a vibrantly kinetic fantasy epic infused with some raunchy humor. The cast is great, the story is solid, the action scenes are thrilling & violent and the music and cinematography are wonderful. Well worth watching!"
"This flick failed because it was released in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting. I was expecting mediocrity and was SHOCKED to find a hilarious, offensive and surprisingly relatable sci-fi-horror-comedy reminiscent of 2006's Slither. The cast is what makes it work so well and the alien angle is well-executed. Give this one a "watch"...you might enjoy it!"
