Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Friend From Mexico, started as a need to record my experience while in induced coma, and I wrote most of it on paper lying in my hospital bed (a lot of tears and very bad handwriting). After several people read it, I started enjoying the feeling of putting the reader out of their comfort zone, creating sensations, changing perspectives, and decided to publish it.
When life is at the edge, you can understand many things about it. Enjoy.

More About the Author

Paragliding was Apostolos' love and passion for over 20 years. He is a four time champion of Greece, and has participated in various international competitions as a member of the Greek National Team.

His final competition and final paragliding flight was in 2009 at the World Paragliding Championship in Mexico. On the final day of the competition he suffered a mid-air collision with another pilot and as a result was comatose for 12 days. In total, he spent a month and a half in intensive care where he survived against all odds. Following the best part of a year in various hospitals, he was again released to the world as a wheelchair user.

Three years since his accident he obtained the first license in Greece for a pilot with disabilities and on 2013 he won the Greek championships of ultralight aircrafts.

Format: Paperback
This book is AMAZING. It guides you word by word through the mind of Apostolos from the moment he had his paragliding accident in Mexico up to the point of his return to Greece. The first half is an acid trip into the hallucinations of a man in coma, followed by the grueling truth of reality in the second half. What Apostolos went through is stuff for the med books - staying alive against all odds during a 1 1/2 month in intensive care and coming through to tell us all about it in this awe inspiring book.

Cannot recommend it enough. It will shake you, move you, tear you apart. And in the end, enlighten you. As Apostolos says in the book's website: "Only if you live life on the edge, can you trully understand it".

The book is a fascinating read for both pilots and non pilots. Mr. Mavrothalassitis manages to be descriptive, yet raw and to the point. Can't wait for his next book!
