I owned this bag in desert tan for several years before I finally gave it away. I think it's best to divide it into pros and cons.

    PROS:
This will probably be the last rucksack you ever need. It is indeed built for the long haul and is tough as nails.

It's a beautiful bag. I got many compliments. I would call it an adult bookbag.

    CONS:
There is no padding or support on the leather straps. In other words, it's just a strip of thick bridle leather. This can become uncomfortable quickly, and in a few situations became painful. I could feel the leather cut into my shoulder.

In the warmer weather, when you sweat, the leather will bleed into your shirt. I ruined a few lighter-color shirts that way.

It is very heavy. I started to realize this after I had carried it about a mile. There is no bag padding/ support, and so you can actually feel the contents of the bag hitting your back.

Calling it a rucksack is pretty generous. This has the dimensions of a backpack.

There is no laptop sleeve inside.

    SUMMARY:

Aesthetically beautiful and built for the long haul. But not exactly practical or functional for 21st century life.

...get the best? OK, it's way tough and made from very high quality materials. That's a given with Filson. But the design is lacking. The top flap allows the (extremely high quality) zipper to be exposed, letting water inside. The flaps for the two aft pockets likewise don't actually keep water or snow out. I haven't worn this much, but use it as a shooting bag, dragging and tossing it around with all sorts of heavy and abrasive stuff inside. Works real good for that. I probably will eventually use it for day-hiking as well, though it's a bit too big for that, and too small for anything longer.

If wishes were horses. Be nice to have some way of putting blanket roll straps (old Marines know about these) on it to carry a poncho, tent or blanket. Be nice to have some way of hanging stuff from the bottom or the back of the pack. But what you've got is the room inside. Only.

I'd certainly recommend it for someone who wants a high class book bag or discrete shooting bag. As a rucksack, it's limited. And heavy - did I mention heavy?

For those who have yet to experience the pleasure of using a Filson bag or piece of luggage of similar quality, do yourself the favor of investing one. That being said, it is what is it. What I mean by that is this: Filson intends to create clothing and luggage that emulates the quality and usage of such items 100 years ago. This is a very tough bag, it is made of thick leather and even thicker canvas. It will not be the most comfortable backpack you've ever worn right out of the box. It will take time and energy to break it in. If you are the kind of person who wants something squishy and soft right out of the package, I would advise you look elsewhere. However, if you are the type of person who prefers quality, long wear, and classic style over perfect comfort, this is the rucksack for you.

As for the size, it is a wee bit smaller than I originally expected. I purchased this for a daypack and also as a book bag for school. It works surprisingly well for both of these applications. I can easily fit all of my large texts and binders in it without trouble. I can also fit a spare coat, food, water, and general field items in it on the weekends when I take it hiking.

The fit is different than what you might be used to, it is about the same height as your standard school backpack but rides higher on the back due to the strap design. I like this because it allows your chest and upper back to hold the weight of it instead of your lower back like many modern packs. The straps are about 1.5" wide and are sufficient for comfortably securing the weight of your pack. Many comments here and on the Filson website complain about the straps. They are not padded, and they are not very wide.

Nice quality bag with big zippers and leather straps. Its thick canvas holds tools, books and anything heavy reliably. Its zippers never stick. Mine has aged well and gets compliments. The leather straps are comfortable. You can find bags that are as strong and durable in lighter weight materials that cost less. I like the leather, canvas and brass on this bag so I'm fine with the higher price and weight. I haven't had any problems with it in the rain. If it's pouring and I'm hiking or biking I wear a poncho over it. A classic like this will have decent resale value but you'll probably never want to sell it. From the worksite to the office to traveling, it never goes wrong. Happy trails.
