This review is from: Cabin Air Filter for ACURA RSX (2002-2006); HONDA Civic (2001-2005), CRV (2002-2006), Element (2003-2008)
I installed the replacement cabin air filter in my 2007 Honda Accord after having the vehicle for 18 months, and it made a pretty good difference in the air quality and velocity. So, I decided to replace the one in the 2004 Honda Civic as well -- the instructions were clear, except that you have to use a little force to push the tabs from the inside of the glove comparment outward, and then the glovebox falls down.
The whole thing took under 10 minutes end to end, and I expect to get better results with the Civic since these filters had never been changed.

I've done general maintenance on my cars for years but never replaced a cabin air filter before. After a quick check online, I saw that the procedure for changing it (them actually, as there are two filter plates) is pretty simple (the box comes with nice instructions, by the way). You open your glove box, pop off its the holding clips, pull off the cover to the filter compartment inside and pull out the two baskets (one slides out from the right). [I ran the A/C here for a few minutes to clear out the system.] Then just replace the filter packs with the new ones and put everything back in reverse.
The air does smell cleaner, the A/C is colder, and I don't know if the systems are connected, but my engine doesn't seem to be as taxed when the air is turned on. There's really no reason not to change these yourself, especially given the price (a fraction of what it would cost at a shop). On my 2004 Civic it's recommended every 30,000 miles, but my filters were pretty dirty (I mostly drive in the city) so you might want to check them around every 20,000.

This item fit in my 2003 Honda Element. I could tell the difference in air quality about 2 days after putting it in.
