4.0 out of 5 stars Pick it up, love it. Read about what music is today., October 29, 2003

This review is from: Filter - Canada (Magazine)
Of all the glossy, coffee table-ready music magazines out there, this is by far the best. A little thinner than say a Q or Spin, but that's good since there are less annoying advertisements taking up half of the magazine. The articles are honest and intelligent, without taking things too seriously. The bands they choose to review are also along the same lines, and are often reviewed before to mass media hype or superstardom. But they do review the more established music darlings like Radiohead and David Bowie, but in a way that's fresh and not they same article you've read 5 times before in other glossies. So get your artists while they're young and apreciate the ones that have been around the block a few times a whole lot better.
If you get a music magazine subscription this year, get Filter. I swear you won't be dissapointed. They're also fairly new, so please support newbie in the world of mass mosters like Rollingstone and Spin.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Filter" out the garbage, April 10, 2005
This review is from: Filter - Canada (Magazine)
Music magazines -- that is to say, magazines that actually cover music -- are becoming a scarcer breed. Lots of one-hit wonders, semi-nude photos and ultra-biased reporting. Fortunately, Filter is not one such magazine. Excessive ads, hot-talentless-celeb-of-the-moment interviews, gossip and flash-in-the-pan coverage are not to be found in this sleek, open-minded magazine, and that's a relief.

The smooth, glossy exterior of the magazine shows that a lot of care has been given to this magazine, and the contents reflect that. Music coverage tends toward good music, both of the past and present -- among the bands are Cursive, Modest Mouse, Hot Hot Heat, M83, The Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, the Stone Roses, Supergrass, the Hives, and more.

Don't worry: older faves are not neglected: David Bowie, Lou Reed, Siouxie and the Banshees, and many other talented bands and singers. When actors are interviewed, the choices are solid and the people are talented: Jason Schwartzman, Elijah Wood, "Lost in Translation's" Bill Murray and so on.

The focus of Filter is clearly-defined, but not narrow. It's stuck on music that is good rather than just popular, but not snobbily so. If the music is good, then it gets included: there's room for Coldplay, the White Stripes and the Strokes in this tight little mag, without automatic dismissal merely because they are popular.

But despite the more popularbands, many of the groups it deals with are up'n'coming. The detailed interviews are polished and professional, peppered with nice clear photographs (the Bowie shoot is especially gorgeous). And reviews are clearly-written and concise, giving a sense of the album's flavor.

Newcomer Filter has the guts and strengths to become a music mag to be reckoned with. For fans of good music, this is definitely something to check out. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO CLASSIC..., December 15, 2004
This review is from: Filter - Canada (Magazine)
Filter, oh dear Filter. What would I do without my issues of Filter every year? For starters, I would have never heard about The Concretes or Clinic and sECREt Machines! And this newest issue I bought with Conor/Bright Eyes on the cover is my favorite ever! First big article I read on The Arcade Fire and the interview and photos with Conor are tops. I gave up on Spin and now stick with my dear Filter.
