Final Act combines the fun of a murder mystery with an artful and convincing immersion into life in 1590's London. The action starts on page 1, and the short-scene style of writing makes for brisk and enjoyable reading. For those of us that like our history wrapped in something tasty, Final Act won't disappoint. The characters are richly fleshed out, and the social norms of the time contrast with the dreary view many might hold. Jacobson's earlier novel, The Scribe's Family, used a time-warped family to hopscotch across centuries of societal evolution. Final Act confines itself to just a few days, but brings a large cast anchored by an classic protagonist.

Don Jacobson continues his excellence in developing fictional characters and detailed plots in antediluvian times. On the face of it, a novel set in centuries old history doesn't sound very appealing. But it is.

Final Act should be read by anyone who loves mystery novels. While richly endowed with Elizabethan flavor, Jacobson spews forth murder, romance, intrigue, malfeasance, theater and strong personalities, all wrapped in plot after plot after subplot. Set in a few days, author/playwright Connolly Flynn overcomes challenges using equal amounts of ingenuity and bravery. Highly recommended.

Although only halfway through the book, I am so frustrated by the constant errors, chiefly grammatical, in this novel that enjoyment of the plot is quickly dwindling. There is also the presence of 20th century slang and phraseology, creating Elizabethan characters who (not "that" as the author incorrectly writes every single time) speak in modern language patterns. There are also historical inaccuracies, like hangers not being invented until hundreds of years after the time of this novel.

I would suggest the author hire a professional editor for his next novel.

Usually, I pass on books I've finished to family and friends, but this one is going right into the paper recycling bin.
