Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Newly married, Detective Inspector Joanna Piercy returns to duty in Staffordshire in this eleventh installment in the series. Joanna is less than thrilled, however, to be handed what appears to be a dud assignment: interviewing the resident of a remote farm who’s been filing all sorts of odd complaints: someone is moving her nightdress from her bed to a chair, someone planted a dead mouse in her bread box, etc. Joanna’s colleagues, grown tired of the woman’s repeated calls, have written her off as a nutter, but, once Joanna looks into the woman’s complaints, she begins to wonder if the woman, a former child television star, might be in some very real danger. The Piercy novels are character-driven procedurals, and this one features a particularly intriguing mystery. Stylistically, though, there are some bumps in the road: the author favors long expository paragraphs that tend to slow down the story, often when quick pacing is called for. This shouldn’t be a major impediment to enjoying the mystery, but some readers might wish the author would get to the point a bit more quickly. --David Pitt

"Masters well-paced 11th Joanna Piercy mystery, produces surprises to the end." (Publishers Weekly)

“A solid police procedural especially likely to appeal to 1960s nostalgia buffs.” (Kirkus Reviews)
