5.0 out of 5 stars Hope the movie is as good, August 13, 2004
This review is from: The Final Cut (Paperback)
With adaptations most of the time the book is far better. With Robin William's talents, I hope I am wrong. In this one the main character played by Williams has to edit memories for a "movie" to honor the deceased. In the future people can have a chip implanted to record everything that's experienced from cradle to grave. The William's character has to edit the film to make monsterous people look like saint. His current job has a personal connection to his past and possible future that is very disturbing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not an original novel, November 13, 2007
This review is from: The Final Cut (Paperback)
What no one has noted here, is that this is not an original novel. It is merely an adaptation of the film. So, you get what you ask for...if you are looking for a play-by-play of the movie on paper, this is it. If you want original fiction written by someone with fresh ideas and the desire to make you "see" them in your head, try Clive Barker, Anne Rice, etc. :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept.........but poorly written, August 8, 2005
This review is from: The Final Cut (Paperback)
I have not seen this film but found the book on the "new" shelf at the library.......boy am I glad I didn't BUY this book. The story was fairly interesting, but the writing was childish and very stilted, and the dialog was even worse in some parts. There were at least a half dozen passages that reminded me of the old "Look, look. See Spot. See Spot run!" Here is a passage from p. 137 that is supposed to have us holding our collective breath: "They waited in the dark as footsteps approached the door to the file room. The shadow of two feet appeared at the crack beneath the door. Alan closed his eyes and held his breath, unable to bear the tension. The knob turned, but whoever was checking the door found it locked. Then came the sound of someone walking away down the corridor." WOW. This is about as complex as thoughts and sentences got in this book. Sadly, the bad writing detracted most of the enjoyment I would have received from this story. Is Onyx this desparate for material to publish.....or were they bribed? If the answer is desparation, I know where I'm sending MY first novel. It's not even an idea yet, but I can certainly run rings around Westbrook when it comes to creative sentence structure and natural (and hence, remotely believable) dialog. Save yourself the trouble and rent the movie instead. It will go quicker and hopefully not be nearly as frustrating as trying to slog through this so-called "book."
