3.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a young adult series, March 26, 2010

This review is from: The Final Dragonkeeper: Quest for the Relic (Kindle Edition)
Rating: 3.5 stars

I picked up this book because it looked interesting and it was only $1 on my Kindle. This book would be great for school aged children 5th grade and up. But even though I think that it would be good for younger readers - as a mature reader I still enjoyed the novel.

The novel begins with two siblings - a brother and sister teenage pair named Drake and Madison respectively - who are thrown into an adventure in another realm which they and only they can save. Inadvertently their parents discover this other realm and foretell of the final Prophecy of the two young adults that will save the Realm of the Faerie and their own.

But convincing their parents will not be easy, and both Drake and Madison must prove to their parents that the risk is worth it to save not only this realm but possibly the realm of the humans or as the author calls - Realm of the Grey.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. And I also thought the introduction the different races in the fantasy realm were creative and interesting from both the Dragons to the snake like bad creatures. I liked the "gremlins" a lot who jumped around with such energy chatting. The different races of Dragons were a nice twist to dragon fantasy genre. I liked that the different races were radically different in not only temperament but also in shape as well as their physical characteristics. The relationship between the two siblings showcased in the novel was right on with enough support of each other as well as healthy teasing and irritation between family members.

While I didn't mind the conclusion to the story - it left me wanting and a little dissapointed. It indicated that there were many additional installments needed to resolve the final threat presented in the first chapter of the book. It left me a little put off to know that satisfaction would only come in the way with additional purchased novels.

I also caught a number of grammatical errors that should have been caught by an editor, such as the use of "at" instead of "as" and the like. However, since there is not a hardcopy of this book - it may be self published and much easier to forgive such minor errors.

Overall, it was a very good book and I recommend it for reading at the recommended age level. The violence, while there, is not overwhelming in detail and there are no sexual tones to this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Fantasy, December 30, 2010
By
This review is from: The Final Dragonkeeper: Quest for the Relic (Kindle Edition)
I was in the mood for a fantasy story when I found this hidden gem of a book. I was not disappointed as I was swept away by the fantastic imagery that this new author provided. Right from the start, I was drawn in by the liveliness of his two main characters, siblings Drake and Madison. The relationship between the two was fantastic and reminded me a lot of my childhood relationship with my own sister. Drake and Madison soon discover that there is a whole secret realm out there filled with dragons, gremlins, sorcerers and the like. What child wouldn't want to stumble into a fantasy world like that? It turns out, the sibling's parents accidently discovered this secret world years ago on an archeological dig. At that time it was prophesized to them that their children were destined to save their world. Obviously, the parents do everything in their power to stop their children from wandering aimlessly into danger but destiny must be fulfilled and the siblings go out to meet theirs.
This was a fun book to read. It had a little bit of Harry Potter and maybe a little Lord of the Rings as well, but all in all it was its own original story. Toward the middle, the story seemed to drag a tad bit and I started to think the book was too long. But I soon changed my mind as the story picked up again and carried me to the end in typical fantasy fashion. This book would be great for children and young adults. But it's fun for grownups as well. Anyone looking for a couple days to escape to a new world should read this book.

More About the Author

When I was younger (much younger) I was purely a science fiction reader. My favorite writer and possibly the most influential to me was Arthur C. Clarke. However, I have other writers I admire such as Jules Verne, Issac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Joe Haldeman, Dan Simmons, and I can go on and on. Later I grew interested in fantasy so I picked up *the* books by J. R. R. Tolkein, and followed those up with the works of Terry Brooks, mostly gravitating to Brooks' writing style and ideas.

I've been writing on and off since I was 13 years old (I wish I would have kept some of the stuff I wrote on that old typewriter of my parents - it would be funny to go back and read!) Lately, I've been "on" for the past 4 years - I've got a ton of ideas, just too little time.

The idea for my first novel came up during a period in time, about four years ago, when my middle son was into dragons. He wanted dragon books, dragon t-shirts, dragon cups, well...you get the idea. This particular son is very close to his big sister and I would tease them by calling him a "dragonkeeper" and the sister his "protector", making up wild stories of their antics - they got a kick out of it. The more I teased, the more I came up with stories until eventually a whole story line formed in my mind. Once I got it all sorted, I wrote it and they were the first to read it. To this day, they still ask me about different elements in the book wanting to know my frame of reference and of course recognizing some of the stories I told them verbally. This particular story is really just the start of something bigger...

I'm happily married and have four kids - oldest is my daughter (the Crown Jewel) with the other three being my boisterous sons. I'm just you're run-of-the-mill guy who's thankful to have a great job, a fantastic wife, and healthy and happy children. After a long day at work though, I'll decompress by letting the words flow through my fingers. And whenever I step back and look across the landscape I realize life *is* good...
