Book Description

April 1, 2003
When FBI special agent Carolyn Monahan walks back into the life of homicide lieutenant Conor Rafferty, the excitement is still there. Together they are out to find the serial killer who is terrorizing Boston. Caro has made a successful career of putting homicidal maniacs behind bars, and Rafferty is a good cop who's been handed the case of a lifetime. Amid bureaucratic red tape and a mounting body count, they uncover evidence that points to a decade-old unsolved homicide. The tension escalates when the killer develops a psychotic preoccupation with Caro herself. As the pressure builds to solve the murders, so does the attraction between Caro and Rafferty. But the question remains: Who will get to Caro first, the killer or the cop?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

FBI profiler Caroline Monahan, the indomitable heroine of this hard-charging romantic suspense novel, hasn’t returned to her South Boston roots for a number of years. Guilt over her younger sister’s brutal murder has kept her away, and ironically, death brings her back. Eager to put some distance between herself and Richard Armitage, her boss and former lover, Caroline moves to Boston temporarily to help the local police pinpoint a serial killer. Her homecoming gets off to a rocky start, however, when she learns that Conor Rafferty, another former lover of hers, is heading up the murder investigation. Breton (Coming Home) skillfully balances the suspense and romance plot threads, but the story skirts on the edge of melodrama as Caroline struggles with self-recrimination, her still strong attraction to Conor and a killer who may know something about her sister’s death. Readers will identify with the outwardly tough yet emotionally vulnerable Caroline and admire Conor for his fortitude and loyalty. The identity of the killer may not come as a surprise to readers, but Breton’s descriptions of the investigative process and the unsettling crime scenes are compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of what a romantic suspense book should be, June 18, 2005

This review is from: Final Exit (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Laurie Breton book. I have to say it was very good. It had a couple decent twists and even a surprise ending. My only problem with the book was her excessive wordiness to constantly interrupt dialogue with actions as if it were a screen play and we needed to know the blow by blow of what the characters did with their hands.
The book was about a serial killer, yet we only had one actual look at how the killer worked and only one victim's body. Therefore it lacked a little of the intensity and fear that a serial thriller may have. Nevertheless, the attraction between the two characters was not immediate in the sense that the reader could feel the emotion, but built quickly and only got intense from there.
All in all, I think the author has potential and I hope to read more of her books.

Excellent suspense and plot development. The relationship between Caro and Conor was heartbreaking at times and heart pumping at others. This is a wonderful first book and I will definitely be looking for more from this writer!

When FBI agent Carolyn (Caro) Monahan returns to Boston to help search for a serial killer who is terrorizing young women she must face the past she thought she had escaped. That past included the brutal and unsolved murder of her sister Meg, her dysfunctional family life, and the relationship with Lieutenant Conor Rafferty that she fled from ten years ago. To Caro's dismay she is assigned to work with Conor when she arrives in Boston. Caro and Conor discover that their mutual attraction has not been diminished by time. When the killer sets his sights on Caro, Conor does all he can to protect her but Caro is angry and she refuses to hide. This story is deftly written with charachters who are well drawn and likeable and a suspenseful and surprising conclusion.
