The first thing to mention is that Final Fantasy Adventure is really part of the Mana series (Secret of Mana, Legend of Mana). This is, I believe, the first game in the series with the sequel being the excellent Secret of Mana for the SNES. I suspect that the reason for the name change is simply that Square thought that the Final Fantasy name would sell more copies when released in America. This is an adventure RPG.

Final Fantasy Adventure is similar to a Zelda game in that you control a character from the top down and wander around whacking enemies with your weapon (you get different weapons throughout the game). You must get clues to find where the next place to go is and what the next piece of the storyline is. It is as simple as finding and rescuing the princess, but is deeper than that with side story and the Mana Tree. Like other Mana games you do end up at the tree of Mana after a long adventure. When I first played this for the Gameboy I was about 12 years old (or so) and I loved it. This game was a lot of fun and exploring that world was at times a small challenge but overall was just a blast. It really isn't part of the Final Fantasy series (though you will see chocobos), but this is worth playing for fans of the Mana series as well as any who like old school games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but repetitive, May 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Cartridge)
The game starts off fairly well. The first hour to hour and a half are very fun and enjoyable. After that, fighting the same little monsters over and over gets a little boring, but the frequent bosses are fun to fight so this is OK. The weapon/armor and magic was a lot of fun and easy to use. The variety in weapons and the fact that only certain weapons hurt certain creatures was a very good idea. The only bad part of this part of the game was the lack of variety in magic. This is, however, a minor complaint. The only real problems with the game are the bad graphics (black and white, they were designed for GB original) and the dungeeons. The only reason I say the dungeons are bad is that they usually consist of a series of rooms that look very similar to each other and you are never sure just where you are trying to go. I have beaten the game myself without the use of any guide books at all so the average gamer should be able to do this too. The only two parts that really frustrated me were the last dungeon, which is increibly confusing, and the last boss who is quite hard to beat. My overall rating... play Zelda first (the best RPG series in my opinion) but if you have finished that, go ahead and give Final Fantasy a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why are People dissing this game?, November 22, 2001
This review is from: Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Cartridge)
i love this game, it was one of my first RPGs, i bought by acciedent though, but i am glad, its a awsome game, on a trip i could play it for hours. I love the fighting (legend of Mana Type)- you select a weapon and a magic and attack monsters, the graphics are good for the gameboy color, and the speed of the gameplay is perfect. The storyline was great and i liked the ending, the bosses were always fun and they weren't thoose wierd one that you have to attack at certain times or have puzzling defenses, the dugons are stright forward with a bit of puzzle to them, you just need to spend 10 minutes in one and you'll be a pro at that dugon. Final words:BUY THIS GAME!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars FFA, July 15, 2006

I remember a few years ago playing this game. This was my introduction to the Secret of Mana series even though I believed this to be part of the Final Fantasy series. Maybe they called it this because they didn't know that they were going to make more games with the Mana tree, so no sense in saying FFAII and FFAIII. But the story line is definatly great. You start out as [your name for charecter here] in a forteress where the Dark Lord uses people to play in gladiator like fights. This seems like some of the Final Fantasy games where you start off with normal life for the charecter and then you delve into a rich story line. When you escape the castle, you meet up with a man who was freshly slain by monsters and a girl crying at his side. After talking to her, she tells you that she is looking for an old man. I forget his name since the time it's been, and from there, the story line becomes increasingly better. It was way ahead of it's time where it has plot twists and can bring out emotion in you. I was sad after fighting Medusa (won't say what happened) and at the tree of mana (my lips are still sealed) I don't have this game anymore so I am planning on buying it to beat it again -it's that great! There is also a remake of this game called Sword of Mana for the GBA but has minor changes that are enough for me to shun it because it will ruin my thoughts on one of the most gripping original Game Boy games ever. Buy it now!

Often overlooked as one of the red-headed stepchildren of the Final Fantasy series, FFA plays more like the early Zelda games than the incarnations of Final Fantasy that we are used to. That aside, the game is amazing, with an amazingly deep plot for the time period and plenty of options to customize your weapons and armor, four character traits that you can level up, and eight spells you pick up automatically through the game. While it can't compete with the depth or graphics of its successors, FFA is definitely an oft-overlooked classic from the original Game Boy era.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best pre-advance, portable RPG available, May 30, 2003
This review is from: Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Cartridge)
I can't tell you how much I loved this game when I first played it years ago. The gameplay is addictive, the storyline is engaging, the puzzles and battles are moderately challenging, and the graphics are not so old that they are off-putting. This is a traditional maiden-in-distress adventure story with swords and magic, and was originally part of the Mana series (billed in the US as Final Fantasy to boost sales). A guide or FAQ may be useful to make sure you get all the secrets, but the game should not take anyone too long to beat. It does not meet the high standards of graphics, sound, and story that GBA games like Golden Sun are setting, but for nostalgic, "old school" gameplay this game can't be beat. Buy it if you can find it, and play the hell out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's good all around., March 5, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Cartridge)
I love this game for a few reasons.

1. Storyline is AWSOME
2. Regular GB games are more fun than color ones because you can imagine your own colors for the game, making the gameplay more interesting.
3. My brother beat the game, and guided me when I needed help
4. It's a good classic, and I wish they made the whole FF series on gameboy and others
5. It is so surprising! I am so tensed out while playing aginst bosses that pop out of nowhere
6. It is a traditional Saving the "Princess" game
7. Sure it is old. Old games rock, and since not many people play it anymore, it takes it to a bigger challenge
8. I can play it anywhere with my gameboy ;)

I don't think anyone should hate this great game, so go and buy it!

The remake of this game is called Sword of mana. That being said this game is actualy part of the Mana Series and not realy part of the Final Fantasy Series.

That being said the game play is rather well, the story is inviting and if your a fan of adventure and/or Role Playing games then you will enjoy this classic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average game in the Final Fantasy series, March 9, 2011

As RPGs go, this is fairly average. It's different from the main Final Fantasy series, or the Final Fantasy Legends series. One thing that makes it different is that it's real-time, so you don't have to fight enemies and can just walk past them if you feel like it, though you do still need to fight some if you want to level-up and advance through the game.

This game is not overly impressive or memorable. If you're a die-hard Final Fantasy buff, you may want to try this game once. It provides at least several hours of distraction, and the storyline is okay. You get a total of eight spells throughout the game, and the items/weapons are also very limited. In the end you only have a few essential weapons (that you cannot discard once you get them) Options are very limited, so this is a game that you may only want to play once (much like the first Final Fantasy game for the NES)
