5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a good Final Fantasy action RPG
It's about time Square released another Final Fantasy on a Nintendo console. What makes the game so great is that it's an action RPG. These types of games seem to be going out of style on consoles which is bad. In this game you actually have to use more than one button instead of your typical Final Fantasy where you can just hit "x" repeatedly and finish the battle...

Okay. If you're just reading reviews for the GOOD of the game, please move on. Otherwise, keep reading.
I give this game a 3 star rating b/c of this:

Graphics - 5 stars. This can't be beaten! The graphics are awesome!

Music - 5 stars. Great music!

Gameplay - 2 stars. Hey, sorry, but it just ain't worth it! Single player gets mad boring, and if you want some real fun, you gotta be rich, cause mult. player needs GBA for everyone.

Controls - 4 stars. Very easy to get controls! Almost too easy ...

Plot - 2 stars. Personally, the plot sucks. No real plot that gets you goin, like the zelda games or something. But, you might disagree.

Overall - 3 stars. Music and graphics are great. Controls a little lacking. Gameplay and Plot arent the best. But this is just from a person that doesn't have more than one GBA (yes, I have the game, unlike some people's reviews). I'f you do, BUY THIS GAME!!! If you don't DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! Besides, it's a lot harder alone, and it's confusing, single player or mult. player.

Happy gaming!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A rough start, a smooth finish, February 18, 2004

Many people, it seems are very disappointed with the beginning of this game, as was I. The plot is weak, the fighting is tedious, and multiplayer, for many, is unachievable because of its GBA requirements. About half way through the game however, things start to pick up. The plot thickens, the terrain and bosses are stunning, and fighting starts getting interesting.

If you want to enjoy this game you have to buy it. The part of the game you'll experience during a rental, well ... sucks. Buy it or don't play it at all.

3 stars. Good hack and slash, great graphics. Needs more spells, cheaper multiplayer capabilities, and a better start to the plot.

It's about time Square released another Final Fantasy on a Nintendo console. What makes the game so great is that it's an action RPG. These types of games seem to be going out of style on consoles which is bad. In this game you actually have to use more than one button instead of your typical Final Fantasy where you can just hit "x" repeatedly and finish the battle.

The characters look like they belong in a video game and not in an adult video like the current Final Fantasy characters in the PS2 games. They look like old school video game characters. There are a lot of elements in this game taken from the Final Fantasy world that allows Crystal Chronicles to use "Final Fantasy" in the title. However, only people who have been playing Final Fantasy games for years will see that. The 8 year olds who wrote reviews here obviously have no idea what they're talking about.

I don't want to give too much away but I will say some things about the story. You live in a world covered by something called miasma that is deadly to people. However, there are crystals that repel the miasma and people built villages around them. The crystals need their energy replenished every year so villagers send out caravans to retrieve myrrh.

The story isn't very deep but it's better than the usual story found in Final Fantasy games. Which is: someone's dad goes nuts and attempts to destroy the world so you have to go around trying to stop him and then you get an airship. Oh yeah throw in some pathetic love story to create tension. Square if you're listening it's time to hire new writers and character designers.

The graphics are amazing and most screenshots don't do the game justice. The music is also the best I've heard in a final fantasy game in a long time. The controls are also easy to get used to and you should have no problem with the camera.

The single player mode is a little easy and it's just you and a moogle trying to save your town. If you're not anti-social and have friends who own GBAs then you can link up and play multiplayer which is more difficult. It's also more fun because you have to work as a team with your friends. They each have info on their GBA that only they can see. So you have to talk to each other in order to beat enemies and complete the game.

I imported this game because I couldn't wait for it to come out and I'm happy I did. Crystal Chronicles is a nice departure from the boring, repetitive Final Fantasy games that have appeared on the PSone and PS2. The more recent ones have become too reliant on full motion videos in order to increase length of the game. If you enjoy action RPGs and Final Fantasy you'll definitely want to buy this game. There is no better time than to be a GameCube owner. ..... has an impressive line of games and more on the way. If you're a square fanboy and don't own a GC don't cry about it. Buy one and then buy this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars It isn't so bad, February 8, 2004

I've heard/read a fair share of bad reviews of this game. Yes it isn't a traditional Final Fantasy game. Yes you need four GBAs and link cables to play multiplayer. Yes it does seem a lot like Gauntlet. These things are all true, but that's why I gave it a four instead of a five. It is upsetting that Square-Enix didn't put the same effort into this game as the PS2 installments, but it is still a pretty good game.
For one this game is more than just a Gauntlet clone. The mana bucket, spell combinations, and data given by GBA add a lot more strategy to the formula. The graphics, sound, and controls are also much better than what I've seen from Gauntlet. Sure there isn't the same deep story from previous installments, but who needs it I say. I also say there is nothing wrong with the real time combat. Sure it's not tradtional Final Fantasy, but neither is Final Fantasy tactics and that's a great game.
Now about the multiplayer requirements. 4 GBAs and four link cables may seem expensive, until you consider that the cost is being divided between four people. Besides you get a free link cable for pre-ordering the game, and if you and your friends don't already own a Game boy advance then something is seriously wrong.
So is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles wroth a purchase? Yes! Is it worth the GBA requirement? Yes, especially when you consider what a good console the Game boy is and how many future Nintendo titles will use connectivity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy on the best console., January 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with BONUS GameCube/GBA Link Cable (Video Game)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is probably the best RPG on the Gamecube or any other console. If you liked the Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, then you'll probably love this game. In the game you start by choosing your charcter's race, gender and job. You then embark on a journey to find magical water. Of course, it wouldn't be Final Fantasy if you weren't fighting monsters or solving puzzles along the way. On your quest information is displayed on the GBA screen. Each charcter gets different info so you have to work together to solve puzzles. If you don't have any friends around then you can still go through the game by yourself. If you do this you can just use a Gamecube controller. However you can hook up a GBA to serve as a radar. If your a Final Fantasy fan or a Kingdom Hearts fan you should buy it, not rent, but buy. You can tell just by looking at it that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is better than Final Fantasy X-2 for PS2. Of course this is because the Gamecube is more powerful than the PS2. So if you want a great RPG and a free link cable, buy this today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Graphics slightly repeditive, September 28, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with BONUS GameCube/GBA Link Cable (Video Game)
I did enjoy playing this game. I completed the game both as a single player and with groups varying from 2 to 4 (total) people.

Gameplay as a single player is tough as the moogle tends to lag behind or get stuck.

2 player game is the easiest as far a playability however using the blended spells does take a bit of cool headed teamwork.

3-4 player is crazy.. and difficult since many of the levels require certain levers to be activated and movement around the screen can be chaotic.

As for the game gear I am already a die hard Nintendo fan so I already had the extra gameboy advances including the SP. If you dont however the game could run you some extra dough.

All in all a good game if you can afford it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad But No Multiplayer With No GBA, March 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with BONUS GameCube/GBA Link Cable (Video Game)
Concerning a review below me, 400,000 copies is just the number it sold. It doesn't mean that all 400,000 people who bought it love the game to death. Some of the reviews here demonstrate that. The more people you have who buy something, eventually the more people you'll have who are going to hate it.

As for me, it's not bad. But it isn't to say it's good. 3 Stars is NOT a bad rating mind you. It means "average" as in if you normally like this kind of game give it a try.

I'd say that right off the bat this game is great just by looking at it! The graphics are gorgeous, the character models are pretty and the landscapes and monsters are to die for! It looks better than ANY Final Fantasy Game out there! The smoothest and best looking of any RPG to date.

But I find the problem to be in Gameplay. The Gameplay has a lot of small kinks to work out. The idea of being able to connect your GBA to play multiplayer is great but did they need to make so that you HAVE to do it with a GBA? Granted, what gamer doesn't have a GBA by now? Well, there are still some (like myself) who didn't invest in the GBA. I didn't think I'd ever need it to enjoy a game with my friends.

The cost to play with your friends is mighty expensive. Take it from a view like this (Trust me for a lot it won't REALLY be like this):

The Gamecube and Game itself...then FOUR GBA/GCN Link Cables and the FOUR GBAs. Of course it won't be like that you've got friends who have GBAs and that stuff too but imagine if you didn't...

You hook up and play with up to four friends. I understand why you can't use the Gamecube Controllers for Multiplayer (You spend MORE time in the menu than you think and if there are four of you and the menu pops up on screen you'll be slowing down your play a lot).

But I have played Multiplayer thanks to a friend. It's pretty fun actually but my gripe is, for one when your in the menu trying to do something, you STILL take damage! You could be working something out in the menu and still die! Then there's the problem of your GBA batteries dying which renders the character useless!

It's not a bad game but the fact of what I have to do to play multiplayer is too much. It isn't as fun or as challening Single Player... But I can't honestly say that for someone like me who doesn't aspire to buy a GBA the option to play multiplayer doesn't come up often.

4.0 out of 5 stars quit the complaining, February 13, 2004

This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with BONUS GameCube/GBA Link Cable (Video Game)
This is a good game despite what other people say. The graphics, sound, load time are all execelent. My only complaint with the game is that 32 different character skins aren't enough. But hey 32 is a lot. I know a lot of people if they aren't straight up bashing the game say the story isn't so great. This harks back to Legend of Mana (a mediocre game for PS1). There is a story to the game (done through cut scenes with other caravans) but the story is more of a backdrop then really anything else. I know square is famous for deep stories. But come on how many multiplayer action games for consoles do you know that have fast casual fun like this with great stories? I mean this game is ment for Everyone have them be 6 years old or 35. a 6 year old my not understand a large engrossing story. This is a light hearted adventure that EVERYONE can enjoy. All of your PS2 final fantasy people clam up this game doesn't concern you( wait till 2005 for Final Fantasy 12). For what this game was designed to do it does a great job. Like it. Hate it. I'd rather play this with four friends than Mario Party 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Multiplayer. (If you can afford it), April 29, 2004

I haven't played the other FF games, so I'm not prejudiced about the change in gameplay like most of the reviewers here are.

What I can tell you is this: the game has some the best multiplayer action you can imagine. It reminds me of how much fun I used to have playing the original Gauntlet at the arcade with my friends. It's very enjoyable to try to coordinate when each of you has different information on his GBA screen and you're all being attacked at once.

The single player is pretty good, too, but the multiplayer is fantastic!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A multiplayer FF for GCN, April 12, 2004
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with BONUS GameCube/GBA Link Cable (Video Game)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is a radical change for final fantasy. Luckily, it works. The graphics are impressive and the music is cheerful. Going through dungeons is fun, but fighting monsters can be a pain in the neck after a while. There is alot of creativity involved and looking for artifacts is fun. The main problem is the multiplayer scheme. To play with two people you need 2 gameboys and 2 cables. Playing with 4 people would be very expensive and controls on the gameboy aren't nearly as good as on GC controller. One player mode, however, is enough to keep most gamers interested and playing for a good time. If you like final fantasy or are looking for a good action game with RPG elements than pick this up.
