Classic, best plot of any in the series and most influential,
By Hunter D. Keeton (Cambridge, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Final Fantasy II (Video Game)
As has been noted by other reviews, this was the most influential of the Final Fantasy games to the rest of the series. This was the first game to develop a plot through textual descriptions and dialogue. This was the first to have a plot that contained honest-to-goodness character development. In fact, the conflict faced by Cecil in dealing with his past wrongs and the sins of his family is probably the most rounded character that the Final Fantasy series has produced. In addition, this was the first game to include the pseudo real-time battles, the summoned spirits, and the emphasis on over the top spells. While Final Fantasy III/6 would later develop some of these features even further, this game contains their first and in some ways best incarnation. I have played many RPG's over the years, and this is easily one of my two or three favorites, and the best of this generation of consoles. If you haven't played it yet, you it to yourself to discover where the Final Fantasy series came from.

good but there are better remakes; the SNES version is for a certain kind of gamer,

As much as I love this game, it is no where near perfect. If you are a fan of SNES-era RPGs, I would consider this a must-play, and almost certainly a must-own. If you are simply a fan of RPGs or the Final Fantasy series, I would recommend either of the two Nintendo-console remakes--Final Fantasy IV Advance for the GBA Advance or Final Fantasy IV DS for the NDS. Both games have superior translations as well as the readdition of items and spells which were removed from the game when it ported from the Super Famicom to the SNES. Their graphical styles are different, however, as well as their "bonus content" and difficulty (the GBA game feels easier than even the SNES version--largely due to the extra content--while the NDS game is harder than both).
I heartily advise against the PSX version of the game, which has abominable load times and an unremarkable translation.

one of my favorite Final Fantasies!,

If the original Final Fantasy (NES) first got me interested in RPGs, it was Final Fantasy II that got me hooked. FFII was really the 4th game in the series, but was only the second to make it to the United States. As opposed to the first game, this one had a story and well defined characters and the whole thing just sucked me in.This game had one of the most interesting stories I had seen in a game up until that time. You control Cecil, a Dark Knight serving under the King of Baron. After taking Crystals from the magician village of Mysidia, Cecil questions why he is doing this, taking the Crystals from innocents. He is sent to deliver a package to the Village of Mist. Opening the package, the village is destroyed. Cecil now works in opposition to Baron to try to save the Crystals and not allow Baron to get them all. During this quest, the stakes get larger as Cecil learns of what is really going on. Some of my favorite characters in the series are in this game: Golbez, Kain, Rydia, Rosa, FuSoYa, Edge, Yang, the Twins. The cast of playable characters is large as characters come in and out of your party. Some Final Fantasy staples are included in this game (Summoned Monsters, a guy named Cid, Airships, Chocobos). The game is simply fun to play, and remains one of my favorites of the series,

This was actually the fourth installment of the Final Fantasy series released in Japan, but as numbers 2 and 3 didn't make it to America, this was marketed as FF2 before its debut on the American SNES.
Having played the original a couple of times, I really enjoyed this game. You can easily get this game on an emulator and play on your computer, but I highly recommend this game for the Game Boy Advance (Final Fantasy IV Advance) because the Advanced version is basically the same as the game, but control has been smoothed out and additional dungeons put in. But even before it was updated for the Advance, this was a great game, and is a true Final Fantasy classic.

I love this game to death and I can't wait for it to come out of gameboy advance this December... I'm so anxious. The story gets really complex, and it's hard to keep up sometimes, but that's alright, because it all comes clear at the end. I reccomend this to anyone who likes old RPG's.

This game is hard to describe. I guess PERFECT pretty much sums it up. This was the first Final Fantasy game we ever had. I used to spend hours playing it. In fact it's right here next to me in my SNES system. I'm so glad to have it because my dad was the one who actually got us through the game, because I was just so young I never understood the concept of leveling up. But now I've beaten it twice. The next Final Fantasy I got after this one was FF7, actually, so I wasn't familiar with ANY of the others that came after this one. I don't understand why all you guys on these reviews seem to hate 7, 8, & 9 so much. Just because they're newer doesn't mean they're bad, or anything. I first played FF8 on this demo disc I got from Pizza Hut when I ordered a pizza in about fifth grade, and I loved the demo. The whole game is even better. I love all the Final Fantasy games, that are part of the main series, at least. This game has been a complete inspiration for me when I write my novels. That's right, I write. Eventually I'm going to make RPG's like this one using the stories from my novels. That's how influencial this game and the other FF's have been for me. But here's the deal, folks. This game is coming out on Gameboy Advance on December 12'th this year and probably won't look too different than on this cartrage. I love this game's story. Cecil, a Dark Knight from Baron, and captain of the Red Wings, is forced by the king of Baron to fly out and steal crystals from innocent cities for reasons he doesn't understand. He comes back after a mission in Mysidia and questions the king for his actions and is demoted. He and Kain, his best friend who was raised with him by the king, are sent to the cave of mist to deliver a package to Mist, the town beyond the cave. When they get there, the package opens and burns up the village. Since the two of them killed the dragon in the cave, its master dies also. It's Rydia's mother, and she summons Titan to get rid of Cecil and Kain. But they end up out in the desert and Kain is missing. That's pretty much the beginning of the game right there. There's all kinds of twists and turns throughout it, I've even forgotten much of the story. The only character in the game that I thought was useless (and I do mean USELESS) in battle was Edward the 'spoony bard'. He just lacks any ability to be useful against anything but imps, maybe. Here's my suggestion. Buy this game. It might be found at Game Force, or Comp USA or somewhere like that. But like I said it's coming out on Gameboy really soon, along with Final Fantasy III which for some reason might be on Nintendo DS instead of the same cartriage with FF4 like with I & II. I don't understand that at all, but III and IV are both coming to hand held systems quite soon. I know the new gameboy version of this one'll be the uncensored version, but I'd rather have this one because I've heard Palom says some pretty nasty stuff in the uncensored one. But I'm still gonna get it, though. My SNES won't last too much longer and there's even gonna be new features.

This is the best FF game, second only to FF6 (FF3 in America). The character develpement, battles, plot, etc. are all much more than excellent. What a perfect game. The thing that makes the game most lively are definitely the characters. With people such as Cecil, Kain, Edge, Cid, and many others, you're drawn to the game, and can't stop playing.Everyone should play this awesome game.

The Greatest of Its Time,

It looks like rubbish now, but Final Fantasy II(IV in Japan) was the absolute greatest game of its time. Over the years, other RPGs came along and kicked FF4's butt. However, it is STILL a great game. I highly recommend this game.

2nd best game,
By Eric Bordner (Chesapeake, VA (USA)) - See all my reviews

i think ff2 is the 2nd best game besides ff1 on the nes for anybody who has played it will understand. this game is so fun that you can beat it over and over with out getting bored. I will never plan to sell this game because it is so rare now and it is pretty much priceless. the music in the battles is awesome and it is way better to have random battles then to see your opponent coming to attack. random battles provide you with the chance to level up for ever. most beg rpg players like to run away from monsters and therefor they do not gain levels and can not move on in the game. so basically the graphics are awesome the music is boss and the gameplay is priceless and the story line almost matches up to final fantasy 3. the only thing that could make the game better is the cute and adorable mog.

This was a great, great game. I mostly hear about all the new FF games but this is a classic. The characters are great and there's a pretty good storyline. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone into the classic RPGs.
