5.0 out of 5 stars The best Final Fantasy you could get for Game Boy
My first Final Fantasy game ever was Final Fantasy Legend II. Now that game was great, but it was a bit shorter and had less depth than Final Fantasy Legend III. Unlike other Final Fantasies for NES, SNES, and Playstation/PC, you get much more customization over the characters, and the monster/robot characters are something that really make this game fun. I can't say that...

Unlike other Final Fantasies for NES, SNES, and Playstation/PC, you get much more customization over the characters, and the monster/robot characters are something that really make this game fun. I can't say that the plot is as good as FFVII, but the game definitely has some of the best aspects of the Final Fantasy series and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Game Boy RPGs ever, February 26, 2003

This review is from: Final Fantasy Legend 3 (Game Cartridge)
With the exception of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Final Fantasy Legends 2 and 3 were the best pre-Advance Game Boy RPGs ever made. The battle systems for both were slightly different from their big-screen brethren (especially as they were not technically in the Japanese Final Fantasy series, but from the SaGa series), but FF Legend 3 is fairly recognizable: Fight, Magic, and Item are all in place (though spells are bought and learned). Unlike in Legends 1 and 2, in Final Fantasy Legend 3, weapons are unbreakable and magic spells cost MPs, rather than simply being consumable items.

This is the first FF Legend game to feature characters with given names. The plot is also more cohesive, as progress is no longer from world to world but to different parts of the same world. In addition, the airship is the coolest airship in any of the Final Fantasy games; it attacks enemies, sells items, travels through various planes of existence, provides free healing, and more.

Graphics, music, and length are all extremely impressive given the game's age (released in 1990), and still largely hold up on the strength of the gameplay. Sunsoft's rerelease ensured the game's continuing availability, though it won't last forever; both this game and Legend 2 (as well as Legend 1, though it is weaker) are strongly recommended to console FF players searching for more proofs of SquareSoft's brilliance.

A final note: another of SunSoft's rereleased Squaresoft Gameboy Games, Final Fantasy Adventure, is actually in the Secret of Mana series. Thus, it resembles a Zelda game: enemies are encountered and fought on the main map, with no separate battle screen. It is a good game, but very different from the Legend series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best RPG of the pre Game boy advance era, April 19, 2006

This was the greatest RPG ever made for the gameboy (yes even better than any lame Gameboy color RPG except Dragon warrior 3 was good but not better). It was good for it's time. Sometimes some of the lines the characters say can be cheesy but it was a classic. If you are big on old school hndhelds please get this game. you'll be happy you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars With each new Legends game, it just gets better and better., January 26, 2006

I remember really enjoying this game. The graphics are remarkably more in detail then the previous Legend games. Role-playing games have something in common which is you need a pen and paper to write down stuff people say to you. I don't remember writing a lot but you see a cave you cannot get to yet, then you would want to write down the grid; the number of squares across and down. Therefore, if you do that then you will not have to worry about it so much. I remember walking around sometimes going "where do I go" but here again if you look back at what people have said to you then you will be pointed in the right direction. I liked the game, for me the frustration level was rare. If you like older games then this will be a fun one for you

4.0 out of 5 stars The best for its time and platform, January 13, 2002
This review is from: Final Fantasy Legend 3 (Game Cartridge)
I really thoroughly enjoyed this game. If you're looking for Final Fantasy, let me warn you before I even get started, this game was never associated with Final Fantasy and never will be. It was called Saga in Japan. But that doesn't mean it isn't good.

First of all, I happened to find the storyline very captivating! There were many plot twists I never saw coming and laughs as well (for example, at one point the "hero" walks in and his theme song begins to play. The "bad guy" in this part asks, "What's that music!?" OK, it's one of those 'yeh had to be there' funnies, I guess...). The characters were interesting as well. Of course, nothing was near as complex as any of the later Final Fantasy stories.

The graphics are...old-fashioned. They are nothing compared to today's graphics and probably weren't even that great for their time. It's the same with the music. There are a couple catchy tunes, but apart from that...

So, if you can look past the parts of this game that are outdated and can appreciate it for what it is, I heartilly recommend this game for you. But if you are looking for Final Fantasy...you might be somewhat disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the FF Legends..., March 24, 2011

The first Final Fantasy Legend game was rather simplistic compared to the next installments, but it did set the tone for the rest of the series. FF Legend 2 improved on the first game, tweaking out improvements and a more coherent storyline, but with many of the same features (limited use of weapons and spells, for example)

Final Fantasy 3 improved the series further, with a more compelling storyline, and the old limitation on weapons and magic were removed, making for unlimited use of these. This was a definite boon, as I wasn't too appreciative of having to buy weapons and magic after their uses ran out. FFL 1 and 2 focused on exploring different worlds, moving higher and higher, but this game took a different turn. There really are just two worlds. The first one is played in three different modes (Past, Present, and Future) and you can travel between the three freely, fulfilling various mission requirements before moving on to the second world (Pureland) and eliminating the threat that would eventually destroy the first. Out of the three FFL games, this one is the best, though the second one was still pretty good too.

Another different feature of this game is that you can't choose your party members like you could in the previous two games. You get two humans and two mutants, one male and one female of each, BUT you could change them by eating the meat of monsters, and if you wanted to change them back to original form, you could with a feature you eventually gain later in the game.

Final Fantasy Legend III (part of the Saga series in Japan, billed as Final Fantasy in the U.S. to boost sales) is actually a decent game, despite dated Mode-7 graphics and cheesy pre-GBA sounds. It's a standard 4-person-party RPG that requires some tedious leveling, equipment upgrades, and several quests across a variety of settings. The storyline had a lot of potential, and while incomplete at parts, should leave you satisfied at the end.

Why the high rating for this ancient game? The game brings back a lot of memories of the old days. Is it worth playing now? If you own the game but never managed to play it, I suggest you do. If you can get a good used price, pick it up. Some of the tunes are catchy, and the gameplay is pretty smooth. Also, if you can't be bothered to upgrade your portable system to a Game Boy Advance, this is one of the best RPGs available on the Game Boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest Saga of all time, July 12, 2001

A fierce battle raged on 1000 of years ago. Now doesn't that seem cool. I gave it 5 for for its storyline and how fun it is. I Thought the programing was weak but the gameplay and battle system, basically the entire gameplay is what made the score. it is about an evil entity known as the pureland water which creates monsters . Pureland was the land that was fought for because ofits power in which the land offered. however no one won and every one wasbasically dead except for king sol now the pureland monsters want to merge with sol the most powerfulest being in the land. sol lives on a floating island. which can be reached by only the talon a great space ship. this game has many plot twist. and yes you can eat meat to become a monster or a beast and you can install bolts or screws to become cyborgs or robots. you can change bacck to human or mutant to. you sart out with 2 humans and two mutants in the future when the world is getting destroyed, then you go back to the present with a tuime machine that borgin makes you get into. the elder of dharm then raises you to fight in the pureland water saga.

This review is from: Final Fantasy Legend 3 (Game Cartridge)
It was a good game but a bit short for fans of Final Fantasy. Really it isn't even a FF game at all it is a different RPG but dubbed as being a FF game as it was in the US. I like to think of it as short but sweet.
