If your thinking about joining now is really a pretty good time. Reasons being Abyssea pretty much made everything in the last 4 expansions obsolete. Why is that a good thing you might ask? Well unlike other MMOs when an expansion comes out the level cap is raised and everyone moves onto new content. FFXI had stayed at 75 since US Launch and this meant that every expansion had its own endgame. Because of this your "Best in Slot" gear came from one or two pieces from each type of endgame which meant you would be spending a very long time trying to get anything done.

But thanks to Abyssea the level cap is now 99 and any older content such as Quests & Missions can now be solo'd or Low manned. Abyssea itself is the same way, most content can be done in small groups. With the exception of a few mega bosses.

Update: WoW I wrote this review over a year ago. Just to update some things. If you're starting fresh now actually creating a account is a little bit of a headache. You first need to create a "Square Enix Account" Just google search that and you'll find the website. After you make & account login then on the bottom left under "Services and Options" click Select Service then click PlayOnline / FINAL FANTASY XI. You should see the Final Fantasy XI logo near the center of your screen to the right are 2 buttons. "Add a service account" & "PlayOnline" Click PlayOnline there is where you enter your Activation Key Amazon sent you. Keep in mind your PlayOnline account & Square Enix account are different so either use the same password for both or write these passwords down somewhere.

Now you're almost done. After you download and install PlayOnline in its little window click "Add Member" and enter the account info you just made where it asks.

Hopefully that helps.

I first played FFXI when it was released many years ago. At the time I was just about to start college and I quickly ran out of time to play the game. I picked this up because I was interested in playing again with some of my friends. The game has changed quite a lot since it first came out. It is much easier to solo and party level than it ever was at release. This might be a turnoff to some, but since the level cap is now 95 I think it is essential that it be easier to get to the higher levels.

There is one downside to the game now, and that is why I only gave 4 stars. Many of the games players are 95 or are using a somewhat cheap trick to power level themselves to 95. This means that if you want to play the game "right" it will be VERY hard to find players between levels 1-40ish. Since I am playing with some of my IRL friends we can just party together, but if you are going to be playing "by yourself" be prepared to have some difficulty finding parties if that is how you want to level. If you want to solo it won't be an issue because it is now MUCH easier to solo almost any job.

Overall though, this game has aged extremely well, and it is still a lot of fun.

someone complained about the 30 day free trial which is for those who start a NEW Playonline account....I know of NO companies that do a free trial for existing customers unless they are trying to make up for an indiscretion on their part, regardless of this it is still a good price for this package considering abyssea if you buy the 3 addons separately are $9.99 each and the other 3 story addons are also $9.99 each also, not to mention when I bought the game with just Rize of the Zilart it was $49.99, then Chains of Promatia came out for $29.99, then Treasures of Aht Urgan was $29.99, then Wings of the Goddess was another $29.99

Final Fantasy XI is an MMORPG unlike any other. Story and immersion are at their best in FFXI, and even the most popular MMORPGs don't compare in that regard. Vana'diel is a very special place full of interesting enemies, zones, and challenges.

However, gameplay is optimized for consoles, and the game hasn't changed much in regards to controls since it launched nearly a decade ago. Playing with a keyboard & mouse is almost unbearable, so a controller is practically necessary. Even then, combat isn't as enjoyable as in more modern games. The one shining light is that playing in groups is extremely satisfying. Finding people to party with, and then adventuring to level up together is time consuming, but very rewarding.

The visuals have aged well given this game's age, and the audio is outstanding. The UI is very unorthodox, and takes some practice to get used to, but it works.

This latest package, Ultimate Collection Abyssea Edition, is very helpful for beginners. The beret code included aids significantly in leveling in the beginning, and the additional content comes at a great price.

Final Fantasy XI is a bit dated, but its shortcomings are met with its outstanding visual and audio qualities accompanied by the awesome stories found within. It's an extremely captivating experience that requires lots of patience, but is very rewarding to those who put the time in.

My review is short, simple, and sweet:

FFXI is quicker, easier, and MORE FUN to play. Everything is so much more realistic in terms of playability and reward is far more frequent than when this game began 9 years ago.

If you've been thinking of trying or even returning, honestly there's no better time than now!! Also, now is a prime time especially since you get that Destrier Beret for starting with this collection! That thing's amazing!
