Lesley Mackie brings this final volume of the Armstrong familytrilogy, set in the borderlands of Scotland, to a brilliantconclusion. Mackie, a native of Scotland who trained at the RoyalAcademy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, is naturally at ease with thematerial in this romance saga. Her presentation of villainess LucyArmstrong is at times highly charged and appropriately melodramaticand at other times subtle and seductive. As Lucy succeeds inmanipulating her naïve niece, Mackie portrays a soul-searching andtender ingenue without being mawkish. Mackie glides flawlessly fromfemale to male speaker, from aristocrat to mill laborer, and from Scotto Aussie. M.D.H. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
