4.0 out of 5 stars different and almost plausible, September 11, 2003

This review is from: The Final Plan (Paperback)
I have panned a number of WWII alternate "histories" in prior reviews (and in my mind if not written). This one I can NOT pan. It is good!!! Well written, flows and counterflows with interesting twists, secrets and shows an good knowledge of history, people, military "machinery" and geography. Well, in fact it is believable, and (I'm sorry) probably could'a been written by Harry Turtledove.

While not giving away the plot, we've seen the "escapes" to South America before; We've seen the use of purloined gold before; We've seen the second and third party arms buying. BUT, we (to my knowledge) have not seen this particular twist on Hitler et. al., before. As much as I hate him and everything that he stood for (and its ideological continuation in this book) ...all I can say is what a good novel - "that ends well." Oh I know that I haven't said too much about the story with all its twists and turns. But if I get into it and its characters (and characterizations), I've thrown away the plot and story line - (or at least revealed too much - and probably did already). This one is worth the read...

Enjoy!! And e:mail me with a mailed fist if you think I am wrong. Why not five stars? Simple. There is a level of literature in SF as in other genres that can only be matched by a few. Turtledove with all his books, I give five stars to 1 (Guns of the South), Asimov - 1 (Nightfall), Clarke - 1 "The City and the Stars" (or perhaps "Childhood's End), Van Voght - 1 - "Slan." I can go on, but point stated. Thank you all for reading!!
