Editorial Reviews

Review

"Graphic, terrifying suspense and gripping emotion are what makes all of Lisa Jackson's thrillers so unforgettable. The Morning After just adds to her growing inventory of terrific page-turners."

Kept me guessing till the very end !!!!!
Amazon Customer
The longer I read and started skipping pages to get the end faster, the less I thought the additions were any improvement on the old book.
Long Time Reader
The writing was trite and cliche', the characters made no sense, had no decent motives for anything and were ridiculously stupid.

I am not sure what some of the other reader's issue are with this book being a reprint (and who cares), I think this book had just the right amount of suspense and romance. I really liked the fact that you got to know all of the characters in this book and their history. This book takes you in the beginning when the characters are all young teenagers, which sets the major plot for the story. The second half of the book is sixteen or seventeen years later and shows you what has become of the characters and how dramatically their lives have been effected by the unsolved murders . I really liked the twist this book had in the end, and I found myself speed reading to get to the end just so I could find out who the culprit was. I highly recommend this book!

that this book is a reprint, and granted the type is small, but it's there on the front plain as day, also if you look at the copywrite date it says it was first published in 1995, i think, but this book was NOT released just a year ago, it's been several years. The writer talks for quite a bit in the author's note about the fact this is the same book with a few added scenes. There was no attempt to hide that this is a reprint.

At 16, Cassidy Buchanan fell hard for her father's new ranch hand, Brig McKenzie, who had been hired to break Cassidy's new colt. The 19-year-old bad boy had had his share of trouble with both the law and women. Cassidy's older sister Angie had eyes for him as well but for different reasons. Then a mysterious deadly fire at the Buchanan sawmill was blamed on Brig and he had to run.

Now, 17 years later, another mysterious fire at the same location severely injures Cassidy's husband and an unidentified man is dead. Everyone believes the fire is related to the first. Cassidy has to find out the truth. Who really set the original fire? Could Brig have returned?

Jackson has a great ear for dialogue and is adept at creating characters that come to life and stay with you long after the book is finished. Even her secondary characters are rich and full. There were many possible suspects and I wasn't certain who was guilty until just before Jackson made the revelation. She delved into all the emotions that an extremely dysfunctional family can experience. This book, at a hefty 530 pages, was probably 200 pages longer than it needed to be. Perhaps I would have been happier with the original.

Armchair Interviews says: Final Scream is an updated version of Intimacies, originally published in 1995.

I've read several of Ms. Jackson's books, and I've always found them to be decent but I haven't ever been blown away.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I read the entire thing in one day; definetly a page turner! As another reviewer mentioned, Jackson does attempt to put in a lot of mystery and suspsense, but at least for me, I found it very effective. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

The characters were great. Brig was the typical "bad boy," and was both sexy and sweet enough that I could see why the heroine was so attracted. Cassidy also was very likable. She was a spirited tomboy, and very likeable. The romance between these two was especially sweet because we got to see them when they were young as well as in adulthood.

I was a little surprised by how much of the book is spent on the "back story." Based on the book's description, I was expecting there to be maybe a couple chapters of past history, and then the majority of the book spent with Cassidy's return to her home as as an adult. Instead, there was as much time spent in 1977 as in "the present." This worked out fine since the story of them as teens was interesting, but I wish there would have been a little more of them in the present. I thought the latter half of the book was really rushed. As much as I wanted Brig and Cassidy to be together, it was based primarily on their young love, rather than their relationship as adults. We simply didn't get to see enough of their "grown up" selves. Still, I wouldn't say this knocks it down from a 5 star read.

As for the mystery, I thought it was well done. The villan was neither too obvious, nor so obscure that it didn't make sense.

This was great for a fun read. And yes, it is fairly long, but like I said, it moves so quickly that I finished it in a day. I completely enjoyed it.

I found this to be one of the best books I have ever read. It is long, but a very fast read. It definitely kept moving, with all kinds of twists and turns, especially the end. I highly recommend this book.

This is not one of my favorites...I loved Deep Freeze and am eagerly anticipating the release of Fatal Burn. I've also liked others that she's written. This one just had so much.....misery. And it was hard to care about the characters, even the heroine. If you're looking for a good Lisa Jackson, try one of the others.

Wealthy tomboy Cassidy Buchanan fell hard at 16 for Brig McKenzie, a lothario from the wrong side of the tracks hired to break her unruly horse. Her older sister Angie would do anything to have sexy Brig in her bed, but it's Cass that Brig has eyes for. When Angie and one of her suitors is killed in a fire, Brig flees the ranch, convinced he'll be the primary suspect (whch turns out to be correct, as no other suspect is considered or investigated). Fast forward 17 years, and another suspicious fire has occurred on the property. Cass in now married to Brig's older brother Chase, who has always been driven to surpass his humble roots and the marriage is on the rocks. When she learns that Chase and an unidentified man were injured in the fire, she races to Chase's side, offering to help nurse him to health. She suspects that the other victim, who soon succumbs to his injuries (with the help of the arsonist responsible for both fires) is Brig, and mourns the loss of her true love while nursing his brother back to health, and suddenly feeling an intense connection to her once estranged husband.

"Final Scream" is a repackaged and expanded version of the previously released novel "Intimacies" which was penned by Jackson back in 1995. Half of the book is spent in 1977, building the relationship of Brig and Cassidy, as well as setting the stage for what a nasty family Cassidy came from. Love, lies, deception, infidelity, and incest rule in this story, with a haiku pulled at the end to identify the arsonist. It's a long book (coming it at nearly 600 pages), but pretty engrossing once you get involved in the story; it could have been trimmed at least 150 pages and still maintained the romance and suspense. I would have preferred that Jackson tighten rather than expand the story. But despite its length, it's an intriguing and fast moving story.
