Editorial Reviews

Oxygen are from Sweden that excel in high quality Melodic Rock with an 80's tinge. Tony Niva began his musical career 1987 with a metal act called Zanity. They only recorded one demo-tape which was never to be released for the public masses. Tony also appeared on the single Down Town released with Swedish Erotica somewhere around 1988. After the sessions in Gothenburg Tony was a member in several musical acts around on his home ground regions, such as Malibu Band, Tracy Goes Crazy and Axia. The band NIVA released "No Capitulation" in Japan in 1994. After this first NIVA release there was not much activity in terms of live performances, instead Tony composed own made material during that period. At that point Tony was moving his musical direction from the metal genre. He made an appearance with the band Lion's Share and they released the album "Entrance". Niva have now changed their musical prowess to more of the AOR and Melodic Rock style of direction, the new band is called Oxygen and the album is "Final Warning". What this album is all about is highly infectious melodies and great songs. Oxygen have a knack of turning out great tunes, in the manner of Treat and such other great Swedish bands but they seem to have captured that great American / Canadian vibe of the early eighties, and vocally Tony sounds a little like Lou Nadeau of "Wrabit" so you can be sure they stand out from the crowd!

"Final Warning" is the debut album by Swedish melodic hard rock/AOR group "Oxygen". "Oxygen" is the brain child of singer Tony Niva who joins forces with guitarist Roger Ljunggren, drummer Bengan Andersson, keyboardist Marcus Persson who also produces the album.

Any way you look at it "Oxygen" is melodic hard rock without compromise; the leading instrument -aside of the vocals- is the guitar which brings to front thick-yet harmonious-riffs, incredible melodic lines and blistering solos effectively stealing the show on most songs on "Final Warning". Niva seems attached to the top of his vocal range, delivering most songs on pretty high notes which is not typical for AOR yet for the listener who enjoys such melodic rock singers as Tony Mills and Tony Harnell that should prove no issue at all.

The album opens on the classic-sounding "Janitor of Love" followed by the melodic "Anything for you", the playful "When Tomorrow never comes", the balladic "I remember" and the sweet harmonies of "We Must Fight". One has to mention that "Final Warning" features two songs that touch upon melodic/power metal, being none other than the title track and "Gold From the Future".

Overall "Final Warning" should prove a great buy for anyone enjoying the heavier side of melodic rock and any fan of `80s hard rock overall. If you enjoyed the latest "Hardline" studio album then "Oxygen" should provide more of the same great guitar driven melodic music.

The lead off song on this album of mediocre Swedish rock is "Janitor of Love." Willie Nelson could get away with this, but these guys are way too earnest. Here are the lyrics:

Love is meant to last forever
I'll take care of you
'Cause baby I'm the janitor of love

Musically the album is ok. Nothing much to write about. Stand out track is Gold From the Future.
