Book Description

September 1, 2000
Whether you’re going through a divorce or advising clients who are the financial implications and consequences can be significant. This must-have guide advises all involved parties how to "Get it all" and go through the process with the greatest amount of confidence, and least amount of emotional distress.

You’ll find everything needed to plan for a divorce no matter which angle you are looking at the settlement from. Whether you are the wife, the husband - or the advisor in the middle - Wilson’s "survival manual" addresses all the key issues, including

- division of assets
- premature interruption of long-term investment strategies
- economic issues in the aftermath of divorce
- property valuation, spousal and child support, debt, taxation and all the complex emotional factors these discussions prompt.

Don’t start divorce proceedings for you or your clients without reading this powerful new handbook.

Divorce is an emotional and an economic event, affecting the lives of everyone involved. It can have serious financial consequences that will dramatically alter your or your clients lifestyle. Both those ending a marriage - and the financial advisors who counsel them - need to know the financial and legal consequences that terminating a relationship may create. And now, certified financial planner Carol Ann Wilson’s readable new book presents all the major issues that should be considered during the final stages of a marriage.

Wilson starts out by viewing divorce from all perspectives, offering both the wife’s and the husband’s point of view, and detailing the roles played by financial advisors and attorneys.

In-depth, understandable chapters also cover important issues, including
- Property valuations and Settlements
- Dividing the house
- Pensions - his, hers, or theirs
- Child support, alimony and other types of maintenance support - and the tax implications to all parties involved
- On-going insurance coverage
- Social Security benefits
- Debt, credit and bankruptcy- how to manage and separate

Plus ... Wilson addresses the mediation process head-on, with case studies that illustrate how it often turns terribly wrong - and common-sense ways to avoid that painful course.

Also provided is a complete overview of divorce procedures from knowing how and where to find information about the divorce laws in different areas, to what to expect as the difficult process begins and how to get through it all with dignity and finances intact.

Financial advisors will find complete coverage of the unique issues they need to confront, including:

- How to work with lawyers
- How to serve as an expert witness in court
- Your role if the client is the wife - or the husband

Wilson even provides a checklist detailing all the documents participants need to gather for financial advisors and attorneys, and a complete resource section referencing other books on divorce, mediation associations, and more. Divorce is such a delicate and difficult experience for everyone involved - whether you are going through the divorce yourself, or trying to counsel someone who is. Armed with this book, advisors will better be able to assist their clients. And those ending a marriage will be able to start their journey being well informed and on their way to the most rewarding financial settlements available.
