5.0 out of 5 stars Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations
This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible book with poor examples
We used this book for our introductory finance class, and I hated it. Perhaps it's just the outdated edition, but I found that the excercises at the end of each chapter were awful. The book does a poor job of explaining difficult concepts. The book is also boring and drab illustrations. There has to be a better book out there. I quickly sold my edition of this book,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, March 28, 2005
A very comprehensive and informative book, even though the examples are for the US it can be used and applied to other countries and systems. Gives a good grounding for financial understanding of healthcare entities. Highly recommend it to anyone looking interested in financial managment of health care organizations

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible examples and Homework problems!, February 14, 2012
This review is from: Financial Management of Health Care Organizations: An Introduction to Fundamental Tools, Concepts and Applications (Josseybass) (Hardcover)
I recieved an A in both financial and managerial accounting. Yet this book is extremely confusing to me. Don't waste your money! My teacher ordered the answer manual and it doesn't even explain how the answers were calculated. In my opinion, the authors are lazy and need to reevaluate this entire book.

I bought this book for the Regis University classes NR614 and NR615 on Healthcare accounting and found it to be excellent. I am in the Masters of Nursing Program for Nurse Management. The items in this book are directly applicable to the Nurse Management role.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text!, December 19, 2010

This is a very readable and very clear text on finance and managerial accounting, and much better than some of the other texts I have seen and used on the same subject. It has a lot of great examples of finance in healthcare which makes the subject matter more easily understood within the context of other classes in the curriculum. For profit and not for profit issues in managerial accounting are covered which are very valuable and clearly explained. I like the way many of the terms are defined and explained before they are applied in examples and cases later on. A very well laid out text.

4.0 out of 5 stars MSc. Course Textbook, November 15, 2010

This review is from: Financial Management of Health Care Organizations: An Introduction to Fundamental Tools, Concepts and Applications (Josseybass) (Hardcover)
This book was recommended as a suitable textbook for a Master's in Health Administration financial management course I teach in the Caribbean.
The basic material is sound and the examples good and useful although I would like to have more cases provided. Also, although written in the USofA there could be more international examples. I would also like more information on the IFRS - its purpose and rules - as this is the governing body of accounting regulation.
The book is easy to read and I would recommend its use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for non-accountants, but could use more on healthcare specifics, May 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For someone who knows little about accounting and finance, it provides a good overview with a slant towards healthcare. Throughout the book, there are sidebars that provide a good perspective of what healthcare organizations are really doing and the issues facing the healthcase industry.

For someone who knows accounting and finance, but is new to the healthcare industry, only a third of the book deals with specific healthcare finance issues. The book also seems to be written from a payor's perspective of provider finance, but maybe it's just the nature of the healthcare industry overall. Also, this book was updated in 2003, and given the dynamic nature of the healthcare industry, some topics may not be current.
