Today, many financial institutions offer all types of financial services, such as banking, mutual funds, securities services, and insurance services. Although financial institutions overlap in the services they offer, the services that can be offered are distinctly different. The discussion of financial services in FINANCIAL MARKETS & INSTITUTIONS, 8e is organized by this type of service. Each type of financial market is described, focusing on the securities that are trade in that market and the participation by financial institutions. Pedagogical features, such as chapter summaries, learning objectives, and internet exercises, give you the tools you need to comprehend financial markets and institutions.

5.0 out of 5 stars well written, September 28, 2004
This book is a great introduction for someone with little background in economics or finance. It is also a good refresher for people that do have backgroungs in finance. I used it for the latter purpose and I still learned some things that I never previously knew. This book goes into a comprehensive examination of interest rates, fixed income securities, derivatives, and stocks. Easy to read and understand. Well written.

Jeff Madura is a great concise author who does not waste his time nor mine in talking over everyone. If you want a book that is easy to understand and will build upon your knowledge as you read...this is it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, September 9, 2010
I am currently teaching a class using this textbook. The textbook itself is decently written, although the transition between topics is not always smooth. The author tries to incorporate recent developments or international trends (the euro being a frequent topic) but these seem patched into the text. Still the textbook is definitely accessible for students, but does not many materials to provoke excitement or interest.

The materials provided for instructors that come with the textbook are truly underwhelming. Powerpoint slides are very bare-bones, and the testbank contains mistakes and questions that show fundamental lack of understanding of some concepts. I spend a lot of time creating decent powerpoints and need to be extremely careful and double-check everything when using questions from the testbank. If you are an instructor thinking about adopting this textbook I would advise against it. The cost for the student is high, the textbook itself is just OK, and you as an instructor will have a lot of work preparing.
