Weinstein, a financial columnist for Good Housekeeping, covers all aspects of working on your own, from starting your own business to retirement. She begins by discussing the many decisions the newly self-employed need to create such as business structure (sole proprietorship vs. partnership vs. corporation) and working at home vs. working in an office. She also discusses financing your venture and how to live with an erratic income during the initial stages. The most useful chapters are on insurance and taxes. Considerable space is devoted to the life, health, property, and disability insurance that the self-employed must provide for themselves, with thorough coverage of the consequences of income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes incurred when working on your own. Significant attention is also paid to retirement planning, though Weinstein gets into a discussion of investment strategies and vehicles that would be better left to books devoted to this subject entirely.
