HOW TO SPOT A TREE FAIRY

I have discovered, to my occasional discomfort, that the more mischievous treetop fairies find it amusing to rain acorns, nuts and berries down upon the heads of unsuspecting humans! My advice: keep your wits about you and wear a sturdy hat during woodland walks.

Use your ears as well as your eyes. On windy days the fairies love to perch at the end of branches, enjoying the sensation of the wind blowing all around them. If you listen carefully you might hear their tinkling laughs.

If you are walking by a tree, you may hear a sudden twittering of birds. This could be a warning signal to let the fairies know of your presence. Fairies do not like humans venturing too close to their homes, and their feathered friends know to alert them if we are nearby.

More About the Author

Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 in Croydon, South London, and spent most of her life there. Because of ill-health she was educated at home and largely taught herself to draw and paint, encouraged by a supportive family and assisted by membership of the Croydon Art Society. She was only sixteen when she had her first work accepted for publication as a set of postcards, and from that time she devoted her career to painting. It was her Flower Fairies books that brought Cicely Mary Barker her greatest popular acclaim. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school.

Those who own Fairyopolis or the Maggie Bateson fairy pop-up books such as My Fairy Winter Wonderland or My Fairy Garden will treasure this book, too. CM Barker's fairies are hidden in five lush pop-up scenes. The paper engineering is multi-layered and very well crafted. There are surprises from cover to cover!
